Last time I tried to do it online and it wouldn't let me.
So I go down to the DPS office and get told "My citizenship status was in question."
"Citizenship status. I thought it was called a DRIVER's license"
3 trips later, having to bring my original Austrian birth certificate, the official English translation thereof, my State Department form stating I was an American citizen by birth, and my DD-214, I finally got it renewed.
Even then the person looking it all over had to call their stuporvisor, who then called in another stuporvisor, before it was reluctantly approved.
I remarked that I had served in the USAF with a Top Secret clearance and I didn't have to go through all that.
"How did you get license then before?"
"I wasn't asked all this crap 40 years ago"
This time all I had to do was fill in the blanks, enter my credit card number and print out the temporary license. Took about 10 minutes.

(14,255 posts)voter-suppressing "new rules". After doing that successfully, we can renew online.
My sister has been married three times - needed all three marriage licenses/certificates, in addition to birth cert., SS card, utility bills, whatever.

(27,559 posts)It was hard enough for me... a college graduate who is pretty on top of things to get everything together I needed. Did I mention a US Passport doesn't count?
I can only imagine what an elderly, or homeless, or person who moves around a lot has to go through.

(27,559 posts)passed similar, or worse rules a few years back.
It was a pain in the ass to renew my DL there.

(42,760 posts)I brought along a copy of my birth certiicate, which shouldn't have been allowed and I should have been turned away. I didn't know the examiner but in conversation it was revealed we both went to the same high school at different times. I dropped the names of a few teachers we both would have known. I was approved for a new license. That probably wouldn't work today because the process is more rigid now.
