The view from my front porch... Wish us luck! Winds forecast tomorrow 14mph sustained with 20mph gusts. Five miles as the crow flies. In the Jenks Lake area of the National Forest for Google Earth users.

(24,853 posts)We could get out with the papers (the MOST important ones anyway) in their own small safe, and the animals in probably 10-15 minutes. When the reverse 911 call comes, we're outta here.
And, while most will be sitting in bumper to bumper traffic, I'll be taking forest service roads down to Lucerne Valley.
I was just bragging to nadin about how good our Hot Shots are. Now's the time when we need them most.

(46,436 posts)I hope Alaska isn't using all your Hotshot crews. There are several up here from the L48 battling the 53 fires here.

(24,853 posts)Fire was reported at about 1600 local so I'm sure they're in the thick of it. They're putting the air resources to bed for the night in about 30 minutes.
It's tomorrow I'm worried about... 30 mph gusts.

(46,436 posts)That looks bad. Don't take any chances and get the hell out of there if it comes close. These fires are very unpredictable (as I'm sure you know), especially with the wind.

(24,853 posts)Lots of dry timber though and if the winds were to shift north it could be in Bear Valley tomorrow night. Not a whole lot of structure worries to the east.

Scary year for a lot of us. Alaska is serious stuff.

(46,436 posts)They were saying on the news tonight that if the weather doesn't change - which there's no indication that it will - the fire on the Kenai Peninsula will probably double in size each day. It's already 3,000 acres, burning back up into the Kenai wildlife refuge now. It's burning what didn't burn up last year in the Funny River fire, which ended up being over 150,000 acres before it was done.

The west is just entirely too dry, and we're way too hot, too. It was 80 again today, which tied the record from 2013.

(154,021 posts)it is quite frankly nothing, but that explains why we were missing some air assets. The local one is nothing compared to that. Where it started, well we have had a few major fires in the last 15 years there.
