(7,820 posts)I do want to ask a question, though. Is there a sympathetic take on Rachel Dolezal's actions? I started wanting to give her the benefit of the doubt, but the more I hear the more her actions seem very manipulative, deceptive, and self serving. Is there a read that's more charitable?

(22,336 posts)I personally think what she did was wrong and was an expression of privilege - she did it to get her some standing in her work world, but could shed that identity if she wanted to, and African Americans can't claim to be white to have an easier time getting a job and getting promotions.
However, I wonder what is up with her family and whether some dysfunction there is a major contributor. My sympathetic take would be that she wasn't coming at this from a healthy place due to her family, and with a healthier family she might have made different choices.
And the link is fixed!
And she can take the costume on and off.
Yeah, there's got to be some serious stuff going on with the family

(7,820 posts)Really great take on it. And yes, I do agree that there is something going on with the relationship with the parents.

(8,028 posts)Is this video suggesting that the little boy, little girl and grown up boy are all the same person?
I would be willing to buy into that narrative if it weren't for the last image... of the little girl. It appears to me that this ad is about the grandpa, children and the passing of time as they grow older...
I could be wrong. Regardless, I appreciate your support of the LGBT, and specifically trans, community.

On edit: Nevermind. The video that was playing initially was completely different from the one that just popped into my browser. Did you change the link?... Either way, thanks again for your support of the LGBT community.

(22,336 posts)is transitioning right now, and is not getting as much support as he should be getting. When I hear people say things about Caitlyn, what I hear in my head is the crap this young transgender man I know is getting. The world can be a cruel place.

(7,820 posts)Because she's a public figure and they object to the whole reality TV culture, without realizing they are also talking about people like the one you know who are struggling with their own transitions. Caitlyn's story can do so much good, and is about so much more than her personally.

(3,815 posts)Jenner is an unlikeable person who happens to be transgender. And the more people know about her, the less they like her. The Kardashian connection, the reckless driving, the lifelong attention whoring, etc. In my view, the only one who benefits from her being out front on transgender issues is Jenner herself-and her bank account.

(7,820 posts)I don't care all that much about Caitlyn personally, but her coming out and being open made a huge difference. It had people who never really had thought about or talked about trans issues talking and thinking about them, and I am convinced it left a lot of people struggling with their own transitions feeling less alone. I think there is a bigger picture here that has very little to do with her personally.
