Is being tased sometimes jusitified?

Here I say yes.

I saw the report on ABC news, this 13 year old kid copped an attitude right away, attacked and bit the deputy several times, drawing blood.

He's a repeat runaway, BTW.
I knew a woman who had a girl that ran away several times, over the most piddly things, like being told to do her homework and shutting the TV off.

San Diego Sheriff Says 'Out-of-Control' Teen Could Have Prevented Being Tased

Cell phone video allegedly shows a sheriff's deputy using a Taser against a teenager in San Diego County.

The deputy appears to pin the teen, 13, to the ground while a friend recorded the incident on Saturday afternoon on Mission Road in Fallbrook, California. The video allegedly shows the youth writhing on the ground and screaming in pain as the deputy used the Taser.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said in a news conference today that the deputy recognized the juvenile from a photograph supplied by his mother, who had reported him as being a runaway. It was the fifth time he had run away from home, Gore said.

"I think it's been portrayed -- in what I've seen some of the clips -- that we had an out-of-control deputy. The deputy was very conscientious in this case," Gore said. "He immediately followed up the lead. He tried repeatedly to get the juvenile to voluntarily go in the car so he could return to his mother. In actuality, what we really have is an out-of-control juvenile who could have prevented this whole ordeal just by obeying the commands of the deputy and get in the car so he could be returned home."

Less likely to kill, but they tend to break bones and cause serious injuries. I don't think going back to that is an upgrade.

For that matter being shot is sometimes justified.

Is it justified as often as it's done? Nah.

I am OK with law enforcement using a Taser to try to subdue a person. Yes, there is a risk of death involved for the "suspect", but I feel it is a better option than pulling a gun.

Like I said in my OP, I knew a woman who had a teenage daughter like that.

There was no abuse, she just was rebellious and a brat.

I think tasers are an option at times but not with children. When I worked in child/adolescent psych. Every time we put our hands on a kid we had to report ourselves to youth and family services.

I hope the office doesn't end up with some disease or something. What if the kid is HIV+? That is not acceptable to bite a cop or anyone else.

chockingh the kid and using a taser, then maybe there is a problem with the man also.

But I am sure that the officer was in fear for his life.

And then he confiscated everyone's cell phones and deleted their videos of the incident because he had nothing to hide.

And the cop allowed himself to get bitten once to make it look as if the cop is the victim here.

Which I had thought was the point. They could subdue someone without causing more severe injury, which gunshots will do.
