President Obama: A Champion For The People

Gregory Korte: To Get Around Congress, Obama Turns To City Halls

President Obama has quietly racked up a series of legislative victories during the past few months as lawmakers have enthusiastically embraced his calls for a higher minimum wage, paid sick leave and universal pre-kindergarten. Instead of Capitol Hill, those victories happened in city halls, state houses and county buildings far from Washington. At least six major cities — Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Tacoma, Wash., and Washington, D.C. — have passed paid sick leave laws in the four months since Obama called for state and local action in this year’s State of the Union Address. Since the 2013 address when Obama called for an increase in the minimum wage, 17 states and six major cities have taken action, including Los Angeles last week.

Obama’s state-and-local strategy may be unprecedented in its scope and ambition. Though previous administrations have appointed top advisers to listen to concerns of state and local officials, the Obama White House appears to be the first to aggressively use those same channels to encourage them to adopt Obama’s policies. The strategy has been more effective on some policies than others. Since last September, more than 200 mayors have signed on to the My Brother’s Keeper initiative, a commitment to help boys and young men of color. The state-and-local strategy effort has been particularly effective on paid leave policies, which Obama championed in his State of the Union Address this year. “Forty-three million workers have no paid sick leave — 43 million. Think about that,” Obama said. “So I’ll be taking new action to help states adopt paid leave laws of their own.” That pledge came with a $1 million budget from the Department of Labor to help fund feasibility studies for state and local governments, which will begin to be awarded this summer.

Laughing here, he is so very lame. He is running all three, HOUSE SENATE WHITE HOUSE, all by himself. And! He is getting the job done.

It is time to repeal and replace some Congress people and Senators in 2016.

"I think the president has always had the perspective that change always happens from the ground up, and our state and local officials are oftentimes more influenced by the will of the American people than the politics in Washington would seem to indicate," Jarrett said in an interview."

Mahalo for this news on President Obama, she!

The Long Run

Pragmatic Politics, Forged on the South Side

snip//

In August 1999, Barack Obama strolled amid the floats and bands making their way down Martin Luther King Drive on Chicago’s South Side. Billed as the largest African-American parade in the country, the summer rite was a draw over the years to boxing heroes like Muhammad Ali and jazz greats like Duke Ellington. It was also a must-stop for the city’s top politicians.

Back then, Mr. Obama, a state senator who was contemplating a run for Congress, was so little-known in the community’s black neighborhoods that it was hard to find more than a few dozen people to walk with him, recalled Al Kindle, one of his advisers at the time. Mr. Obama was trounced a year later in the Congressional race — branded as an aloof outsider more at home in the halls of Harvard than in the rough wards of Chicago politics.

From your link

An untraditional politician who at times uses traditional political tactics, Mr. Obama, 46, was portrayed in dozens of interviews with political leaders and longtime associates in Chicago as the ultimate pragmatist, a deliberate thinker who fashions carefully nuanced positions that manage to win him support from people with divergent views.

He sure is no lame duck. He has found ways to work around the do nothing GOP. I say bravo.

probably won't have another president (or candidate) as electric as Pres. O for a long time. He's a once-in-a-lifetime politician, and it was easy for him to inspire and motivate millions of people both nationwide and around the world. I've had a few disagreements with his policies and approaches occasionally, but as I've gotten to know him overall, I respect him. He is true blue and clear-headed--two traits that are desperately still needed in the political realm. Aside from the obstruction, he has done a great job in working to fulfill most of his campaign promises. He's like a GM turning around a football team that is coming off of years of losing.

Very clever. Since Congress is so R/Bullheaded, this helps things along and it will show that they work well.

Wish we could elect him a third term, doubt he would want to run again. Always grateful he decided to run the second term!
