LA Officers' Union Says "Proactive Policing" May (Deliberately) "Decline" as Result of Ford Decision

Some LAPD officers have told a union official they are less likely to pursue proactive policing as a result of the police commission ruling the Ezell Ford shooting was "out of policy," according to the president of the officers union.

"This is a tough decision for the officers on the street now," said Craig Lally, longtime LAPD lieutenant who now serves as president of the LA Police Protective League.

"I've gotten a lot of calls since this decision," said Lally. "And they're really scared about doing their job right now, doing proactive police work," Lally said during an interview.

"I get a lot of calls that the officers basically tell me they're going to roll up their windows, they're going to answer the box -- the radio calls -- and they're just going to go from call to call... and do their job. But other than that, they're just going to shut down. They're not going to do any proactive police work. That's what they tell me."

The murder rate in New York City has spiked an alarming 20% in the first two months of the year, prompting NYPD brass to rethink strategy to curb the deadly trend.

Since Jan. 1, 54 murders have been recorded in the city, up nine from the same period a year ago, according to the grim stats released Monday.

Shootings have also climbed 20% — with 149 so far in 2015 compared with 126 in the first two months of 2014.

But overall, crime has dropped 11% in most major crime categories, including burglary, robbery, rape, grand larceny and auto theft.

So, overall crime is down, except for murders and shooting. Which reminds me of my favorite Marion Barry quote: "Outside of the killings, D.C. has one of the lowest crime rates in the country."

"Proactive policing" is almost explicitly the same as "shoot first and ask questions later."

Better to have them exercise restraint and discretion than to have them running around free of consequences.

So no more Racial Profli...er Proactive Policing...because some officers are now scared (gee I wonder why) to tackle and shoot a man in the back for no reason.

Good.

...I also wondered if it simply meant less random harassment from cops with nothing better to do.

L.A. might be better off if all they did was take calls, and respond to actual events. Instead of trying to create them.
