For anyone who remembers this; The 1st Bush supported the HUD HOME Program; it is now attacked.

While he was not a huge fan of HUD here is some history:

"The 1990 housing bill included another Kemp initiative, Shelter Plus Care, combining housing assistance with social services. For Kemp, passage of the act gave him a concrete legislative accomplishment to add to his work in 1989 in cleaning up HUD in the wake of Reagan-era scandals. (HUD scandals, p. 666; 1989 Almanac, p. 639)

Congress provided no funds for either the HOME or HOPE programs in the fiscal 1991 spending bill, however. (HUD appropriations, p. 854)

In early 1991, Bush requested $165 million for HOPE and $500 million for the HOME block grant program in the supplemental fiscal 1991 appropriations bill."

He did request the first funding of the program that assists thousands of low income people every year. From building new homes and apartments to rehabilitating and preserving the affordable housing stock HOME has been a great buffer against lousy housing, or no housing, for children and the elderly and disabled and all sort of folks left out of our so called 1st world economy.

I wonder how he feels now? Do you think an appeal to him to appeal to the scumbags in Congress now would help? Maybe turn a couple of senators?

Would this work? Should we try it out?

I also know that substantive federal housing policy discussion is probably not very interesting to people that don't need it.
