I read that we're sending up to 450 of our military back into Iraq as "advisors." Didn't we learn anything from Viet Nam?
The complaint is that the Iraqi forces are not really showing the enthusiasm for withstanding the ISIS group that we think they should. They need more help for us.
Why doesn't anybody ever mention that we killed many Iraqis, both military and civilian, not to mention children, in George Bush's war. Do we really think that they LIKE us!

(23,367 posts)In the second half of the 1950's, we had fewer than 1000 advisers in Vietnam.
So, in Iraq, 450 troops, plus an unknown number of CIA and "contractors", and the number can get pretty close.

(616 posts)I remember Vietnam very well. What I meant is that when we got out of Vietnam, we didn't go back.

(46,416 posts)numbers. Iraq is fucked up in large part because of us, so, perhaps it's best that our military leaders don't bash the Iraqi ground soldiers we are relying on (to avoid putting our OWN combat troops in harm's way).

(616 posts)I don't have to agree with him on everything. But I think he's tried very hard to relieve some of the tensions over there. However, he's inherited a mess, and it's not easy to clean up. Remember the Republican warhawks are criticizing him all the time for "lack of strategy." And they want to expand the mess to Iran.
Stay on his side. He's our best hope.
