LINCOLN Petition circulators will hit the streets of Omaha and Lincoln on Saturday as an effort begins to overturn the repeal of Nebraskas death penalty via a public referendum.
Representatives of Nebraskans for the Death Penalty picked up the certified petitions Friday afternoon from the Nebraska Secretary of States Office and were sending them to be printed overnight.
Some paid circulators were being trained Friday, and they are planning to begin collecting signatures this weekend in the states two largest cities, said spokesman Chris Peterson.
State Treasurer Don Stenberg, a former state attorney general who is an honorary co-chairman of the collection drive, said that if it is well organized, it will be successful in putting the repeal of the death penalty on hold until voters decide the issue.
