Clinton to call for at least 20 days of early voting nationwideBy Anne Gearan at the Washington Post

"SNIP................
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton plans to call for an early voting period of at least 20 days in every state.
Clinton will call for that standard in remarks Thursday in Texas about voting rights, her campaign said. She will also criticize what her campaign calls deliberate restrictions on voting in several states, including Texas.
The former secretary of state's address at historically-black Texas Southern University in Houston comes as Democrats pursue legal challenges to voting rule changes approved by Republican legislatures in several states.
Clinton and her allies claim the changes are aimed at narrowing the electorate in ways that benefit Republicans.

(9,148 posts)They really do need to be called out for the crooks they are.
Good for her & any other candidate that supports this.
The gradual dismantling of basic rights is threatened by RW policy & organized manpulation.
It is a major issue in the survival of Democracy

(34,582 posts)and we need to start having the federal government have standard rules and procedures for voting. The state by state hodge podge is a mess.

(7,290 posts)States won't go along with that - they won't be willing to give up that power.

(885 posts)However what the federal government might be able to legally do is set minimum standards.
"A state can set whatever voting requirements it wants to, however it must meet these minimum standards for all federal elections..."
That one might at least have a chance at passing constitutional debate.

(885 posts)However the only way to find out is to pass a standard into law (preferably something low controversial as a test case), wait for a state to challenge it, and see if the court shoots it down on principle.

(3,283 posts)as long as each state can set their own rules it is a wasted effort.

(118,696 posts)And if the GOP quash it people will be motivated to vote. It is like a wedge issue too, not just good democracy. And democrats are beginning to develop wedge issues. And in this case, if people are thwarted in a policy they like by GOP in the states, people can make doubly sure they and theirs get out and vote on election day. So their is direct action they can take.

(19,326 posts)and one that not enough people are talking about.
Onerous Voter ID requirements, maldistribution of voting machines and poll monitors to create prohibitively long lines to vote in lower-income neighborhoods, campuses, etc. where D's prevail, along with deliberate misinformation being distributed to Democratic voters ... But the one that needs most attention is THE sleeper issue, electronic vote buggering.
On edit: I'm a Bernie Sanders supporter, but am not bashful about congratulating another Dem when they speak out on an important issue like voting rights.

(94,602 posts)I'd love to have someone reduce my early voting days...because I don't have any. NYS has tradition 1-day voting and no option for absentee voting other than being out of town.
