School Puts Up Posters Warning Girls That Having Sex On Prom Night Will Compromise Their Character

http://www.seventeen.com/life/school/news/a30905/you-wont-believe-the-disturbing-poster-one-school-put-up-for-prom/

A few days before prom at Lincoln High School in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, posters started popping up in hallways. They weren't advertising fun things to do after prom, or the newest prom theme. But instead, an entirely sexist message — that girls should be worrying about how to "protect their character" on prom night. 😒

The posters look innocent enough, with stars raining down on a dress made out of words that describe the kind of person we all want to be — honest, warmhearted, and ambitious — but the underlying message is seriously disturbing. One Reddit user posted a pic of the poster, saying that his sister noticed it at school:

According to Patheos.com, the flyers are sponsored by The Crossing of Manitowoc County (a Christian anti-abortion clinic) and Holy Family Memorial (a Catholic health-care provider) and seem to be warning female students specifically against having sex on prom night lest it compromise their character. The Crossing of Manitowoc County told Action 2 News, "We hope that these posters will remind and encourage teens to embrace healthy responsible behaviors so that prom will be a 'night to remember not a night to regret.'"

The posters seems to imply that a girl will no longer posses any of those positive character traits if she chooses to lose her virginity or have sex on prom night, that a girl who makes the choice to have sex can't be "classy" or "thoughtful" or "charming." Of course, there's no poster for guys implying that what they do with their bodies will effect their character. Or, at least that's the implication of putting up posters with just female figures. Defining female students' self-worth by whether or not they choose to have sex is a dangerous form of slut-shaming that sends the wrong message to both guys and girls.
