Obama to press House Democrats on trade through local TV

By Sarah Wheaton

Updated 6/2/15 4:39 PM EDT

President Barack Obama plans to target his trade pitch to fence-sitting House Democrats in their own backyards with a series of local TV interviews.

The president’s message to Democrats: Your constituents like me, and they like my trade bill, so you should vote for it.

On Wednesday, Obama will conduct multiple interviews at the White House with local TV anchors, including the ABC affiliate in Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s district in El Paso, Texas.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest declined to identify additional outlets, but he confirmed Obama’s plans to discuss “how trade legislation would benefit the economy of the communities where they broadcast,” as well as release market-specific data on how the White House thinks the trade pact known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership would help the local economy.

Obama also wants to remind Democrats that he can influence more than the economy in their districts, reasserting his own power to attract votes even as unions and progressive groups vow to make Democrats regret a possible “yea” vote come 2016.

“The president has been clear that he’ll stand with the Democrats who stand with him on this issue,” Earnest said.

“There’s ample data to point you to that indicates the influence that the president has among Democratic voters all across the country,” he added. “And having the strong support of the most popular figure in Democratic politics for your reelection, I think most Democrats are going to find beneficial to their congressional campaigns.”

....or run anything but a very mild sort of populism, is because he’s not really talking to voters. He just wants to be slightly more appealing than Romney. He’s really talking to the people who made Bill and Hillary Clinton a very wealthy couple, his future prospective clients. We don’t call it bribery, but that’s what it is. Bill Clinton made a lot of money when he signed the bill deregulating derivatives and repealed Glass-Steagall. The payout just came later, in the form of speaking fees from elite banks and their allies. Ironically, Clinton has come to express regret about deregulating derivatives. He has not given the money back...."
