Teen stripped of National Honor Society position because she dared wear a sun dress—in Florida

Cameron and Caroline Boland discussing the dress controversy on Fox News

A young woman wearing a sun dress in Florida? Oh, my!
Cameron Boland is by all accounts a model student—captain of the basketball team, class president, delegate for the leadership camp Girl State, and historian for her school's honor society chapter. She won an election to represent her county as a National Honor Society officer, but that title didn't last long:
Cameron won a coveted election for NHS historian for Lee County in early May and within an hour had been stripped of the title — because of what she was wearing — a spaghetti-strap style sundress.

She even offered to wear a jacket to cover the offensive shoulders, but school officials persisted in stripping her of the honor. Needless to say, her mother, Caroline Boland, and other parents are upset:
"The point is she won an election," Caroline Boland said, adding that for her daughter's perceived infraction there is nowhere in the Code of Conduct where the punishment is to strip a title. "The first response is supposed to be a verbal warning and then contact with a parent," Caroline Boland said. She said she was not apprised of the issue until her daughter came home and told her what happened.

School representatives say they are "reviewing the situation." Let's hope they come to their senses and do the right thing. Based on the Lee County Schools Code of Conduct manual, it seems they jumped the gun with this harsh punishment:

Violations of Dress Code will result in the following corrective actions: (1006.07, Florida Statutes)

1st Offense: Verbal Warning and Parent Contact.

2nd Offense: Loss of eligibility for participation in extracurricular activities (maximum of five days). 1 day ISS if not involved in extracurricular activities. Parent Contact.

3rd and Subsequent Offenses: Level II (ISS 2 days) Loss of eligibility for participation in extracurricular activities. (maximum of 30 days), verbal and written parent contact regarding consequences.

Our exchange student got straight A grades, but was excluded from the honor society because that was "only for American students."

National Honor Society.

A number of exchange students at my high school were welcomed into the NHS. We had students from Australia, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and other countries, and they all were admitted to the NHS.

Yeah, ya perverts, the girl has 'em because us wimmen folk still come with breasts, and no, as much as you good ole god fearin' boys try to force us hide 'em under yards of sackcloth, they are not an optional accessory we can leave at home.

I am sure that you are aware at this point in time whet your Lee County Florida chapter of NHS did to Cameron Boland who is by all accounts a model student—captain of the basketball team, class president, delegate for the leadership camp Girl State, and historian for her school's honor society chapter. She won an election to represent her county as a National Honor Society officer, but that title didn't last long:

Before you become a laughing stock of misogyny and shame, let your conscience be your guide, do the right thing and rein in the misfits in Lee County.

Thank You.

Cameron wore a dress with spaghetti straps to give her speech at Ida Baker High School, but it’s against the school’s dress code.

“I was aware of the dress code at Ida Baker, but not going there, I didn’t think it applied to me, I am not one of their students. Also, being an extracurricular activity an event, I didn’t feel a need to comply with the dress code,” said Cameron Boland.

The district says after the vote, students were complaining to NHS advisors about the outfit, and that’s when advisors from every school, including Cameron’s made the decision to disqualify her.

“We put our jackets on and asked if we could apologize and redo our speech and we were told no,” said Boland.

It looks a perfectly smart dress to me. You wouldn't wear it to a funeral, but apart from that, suitable for just about anything, I think.

The most depressing thing about this may be that students complained. This isn't just some adult arseholes on a committee trying to re-enact 'Dirty Dancing', they've produced Puritan children too.
