He’s Uncle Joe. And his son’s death has resonated like a death in the American family.

At a time when so many, politicians most of all, water down grief into perfunctory status updates on Facebook, or a “heaven’s a little fuller”/”will be missed” tweet, Beau Biden’s sudden death has cut through in Washington and in Wilmington, among Republicans and Democrats, among people who live for politics and people who don’t give a damn and may not have read a single article about the 2016 elections.

Joe Biden, after all, is just the vice president. And Beau Biden was just the former attorney general of one of the smallest states in the nation, though one who managed to go through a life of public service making fans and not enemies, and leaves behind two young children.
