http://www.politicususa.com/2015/06/02/obama-drops-veto-bomb-gop-threatening-veto-bill-sequester-cuts.htmlThe Administration strongly opposes House passage of H.R. 2578, making appropriations for the Departments of Commerce and Justice, Science, and Related Agencies for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2016, and for other purposes.
The bill drastically underfunds critical investments in research and development that are key to advancing U.S. economic competitiveness and reducing taxpayer costs for securing essential weather satellite data and conducting an effective 2020 census.
It also severely underfunds State and local criminal justice assistance that helps ensure the safety and well-being of individuals and communities, and underfunds programs that would increase the use of body-worn cameras by law enforcement, expand training, provide much-needed police department reform, and multiply the number of cities where the Department of Justice facilitates community and local law enforcement engagement.
It also cuts support for NASAs Commercial Crew Program that will help end our reliance on Russia for transporting astronauts, critical space technology investments that will help pave the path to reaching Mars, and earth science research that is helping us understand how our climate is changing and how to respond to earthquakes, droughts, and severe weather events. Furthermore, the legislation includes highly objectionable provisions, including provisions that continue unwarranted restrictions regarding detainees ....(more)

(297,323 posts)Congress passed a resolution of disapproval this month on a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruling that sped up union elections.
Republicans dubbed it an ambush election rule, arguing it would allow unions to place undue pressure on workers and employers.
Obama vetoed Congress's measure shortly after noon in the Oval Office, the fourth veto of his presidency.

The president also announced the White House would hold a labor summit in the fall.
The National Labor Relations Boards representation case procedures rule helps to level the playing field for workers, the administration said.

(12,882 posts)Yeah, and he's got another pen that he's chomping to flow ink from - it's the pen to sign off on the TPP. A measure that could EASILY cut the legs out from a lot of what's left of union labor in this country. Remember - this is a president who retained a bunch of the previous administration's advisors rather than select fresh faces from the party it professed to be acquainted with.
This is a giant chess game. Moves that look fair to those who can only see one move at a time, prove to be devastating, three, four, ten moves ahead. I would not be surprised to come to find that this bill and veto weren't a staged event - one with the Rethugs "in on it" - to placate union leaders into trusting Obama's "reasoning" for the TPP. When he keeps something securely under wraps - something that's supposed to be a BOON to us peons - only letting the corporate interests who wrote it - SEE it....... You can bet there's a BIG shaft in our future.
Edit to add: It'll be the American people that have to "pony up" after the TPP sells us out.
Cha

You appreciate Nothing.
What's that old axiom about not being able to see the forest for the trees????? Yeah, he can AFFORD to use that veto pen - when he's brimming with confidence that the TPP will reverse his veto on this. It's a chess game - you gotta think a couple of moves ahead.

(297,323 posts)From some on this board it's all about the "negative". If they can't find something negative to say about the president, they just ignore the truth. This same group has taken it to adding not only Hillary to their "negative" agenda, but pretty much the entire democratic party. The sad thing is they claim to be supporting Bernie, even though Bernie would never accept what they are doing. Bernie is liked by everyone, some of his supporters, not so much.

(4,458 posts)If memory serves:
Too bad he didn't do that when "The Gang of Twelve" passed the bi-partisan Sequester Cuts...only to watch Every single Senator/House member and with Lightening Speed, I might add...Restore the FAA Sequester Cuts when Congress found out they might have to sit on their own asses ...for a much Longer Wait...to get their own rear-ends Home...only to let Cuts for patients in Cancer Treatments be halted, Only to let Meals on Wheels Funding Cuts go forward...and Funding Cuts for the Summer Free Lunch Programs for hungry children go by the wayside. But hey! Democrats, Repubs, Cons and Tea Party alike were NOT Hungry, nor "inconvenienced" one bit.
Not One Senator in the Dem Majority called BS on the "Unanimous Consent" Vote...and not One Rep in the GOP maj House called BS either. Then they sent Jan Schakowsky (musta drew the short straw) out to face the angry people on "the tv machine" to explain and then Admit, yes, sometimes congress acts in a "self serving" manner to please themselves.
More "fact and truth" about the party I had loved for decades.
Democrats are not always as "compassionately lovely" as they would want to appear.
Vet carefully and forget about party affiliation. See the Actions VS Consequence. Listen to what "they" Don't Say.
Stop Rationalizing Away their (Dems) reasons when time after time...We're Screwed and the Stock Market Rises. That is no coincidence. It is No accident. Not when "it" happens Every E'ffn Time. That's a Plan well launched.
The greedy oft times get their way...under the great façade of Finger Pointing, Projection and Transferring Blame.
And we forget too quickly....
I mean the best example of "our" collective memory lapses or Political Amnesia....is the fact the GOP, AFTER the Big Government Shutdown, costing us $24 billion dollars, not only Won both Senate and House Seats..they have a huge Majority now.
I have no faith and confidence in the "token populist" utterances today when So much harm has already been realized...from these "BI-partisan" deals.
In my opinion...of course

(4,458 posts)def goes to those who did not vote...however, Who Has The Power of VETO when the "Rubber Meets the Road"?
And Why, after a Much Worse Dem Loss in 2014 does PBO Now see fit to threaten a Veto?
So, Nope, it's not that simple to "just blame voters" who stayed home.
misterhighwasted
(9,148 posts)..that never would have had to be made and his veto never threatened an override unless he settles for the best he can get.
I certainly do not proclaim that Pres Obama's duty is nearly as black & white as we see it from where we sit.
Any great progress Pres Obama has made on behalf of keeping the RW majority from dismantling Democracy to the point of no return, in his term I credit his masterful skill of negotiation.
That gift of his, is the reason we still live to vote in 2016.
The RW has been in the process of destroying that basic right also.
BTW.

(20,176 posts)when the Democratic Party gives them candidates worth voting for. Too often Democratic nominees in the post-Carter era remind me of Eddie Izzard's "Cake or Death?" bit.
"Eh, cake please."
"Very well! Give him cake!"
"Oh, thanks very much. It's very nice."
"You! Cake or death?"
Uh, cake for me, too, please."
"Very well! Give him cake, too! We're gonna run out of cake at this rate. You! Cake or death?"
"Uh, death, please. No, cake! Cake! Cake, sorry. Sorry..."
"You said death first, uh-uh, death first!"
"Well, I meant cake!"
"Oh, all right...Cake or death?"
"Uh, cake please."
"Well, we're out of cake! We only had three bits and we didn't expect such a rush. So what do you want?"
"Well, so my choice is 'or death?
Why should the public turn out for us when the Democratic party is so adamant on giving them shitty "or death" nominees? I know those sleazy stealth Republicans on the Democratic ballot-line really make me want to pull the lever for the Democrats. It's time to run the Clintonites and the DLC and the Third-Way and all their corporatist, "sensible", too goddamned chummy with Wall St. "electable" friends out of town on a rail before they finish the job of fucking-over poor people, minorities and everybody that isn't their entitled 1%er friends.

(26,549 posts)Oh...wait...that isn't an example of what you claim.
Candidates are not entitled to votes. Candidates have to earn votes. When voters stay home, that is the candidate's fault. They are not "lazy voters". They are shitty candidates.
Who, btw, ran against exactly what you claim they would do - they ran desperately away from the ACA and recovery spending in 2010, and desperately away from Obama in 2014. If they won't admit to voting for the guy, you think they're going to be at his beck-and-call?

(9,148 posts)Why this next election is absolutely critical to motivate voters off their sofas & out the door to the voter booths.
So much in that area alone has been stacked against a functioning democracy, that I honestly don't think the country can recover if voters remain complacent in 2016.
Dems need to vote straight party line & hope the RW dominance can be fractured.
