AMC movie theaters under investigation for anti-competitive tactics

Various sources are reporting that theater chains AMC Entertainment and Regal Entertainment Group are being investigated for anti-competitive tactics.

Each chain says it has received formal inquiries from the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division. The question is whether AMC and Regal have made exclusivity deals with movie distributors that block other smaller theaters from getting certain releases.

According to USA Today, AMC has 347 theaters with 4,972 screens in the U.S.; three of those theaters are in the metro area.

Both chains said they are cooperating with authorities but don't believe they've broken any laws.
