The Beach Boys' Bruce Johnston had some heated words for President Obama while signing autographs for fans in New York on May 10th, according to TMZ.

"Obama? Unless you're interested in never having any money," said Johnston in a video clip when asked about the President. Johnston reportedly called Obama "an asshole" and suggested the president was a Socialist, but the exact quotes are hard to decipher from the clip.

Johnston was also unhappy with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, asking fans, "And who's the Republican asshole? Our guy isn't any good."

He finished with a barb towards a fan expressing support for Obama. "Wait until Obama doesn't have to try anymore," said Johnston. "You're fucked."

YES, I DO have an agenda in this post, and it is to DENY Bruce Johnston his right to FREE SPEECH! It's not the idea that I DISAGREE with him...I just feel like messing with Bruce Johnston. After all, he wrote Barry Manilow's "I Write The Songs," and for that reason alone, he should be denied ALL of his rights.

So please respond to my post CONDEMNING Bruce Johnston as a human being, as a musician, and I PRAY TO GOD bigwillq isn't reading this post, because if there is ANYONE on DU smart and perceptive enough to discover my SUPER SECRET HIDDEN AGENDA, it is bigwillq. If bigwillq sees this thread, I will most vertainly be exposed for the fraud that I am. He truly is SMARTER and more PERCEPTIVE than ALL of us put together.

I've always considered Johnston to be a lucky barnacle on the hull of the good ship Beach Boys. I didn't develop that attitude because of his Pbama remarks. I've never cared for him, period.

Fri May 11, 2012, 02:56 PM

Johnston is a born silver-spooner (and consumate one-percenter) whose musical career consisting of B-grade early 60's car songs would have faded out decades ago had he not gotten the call to be an onstage stand-in for Brian Wilson, who had retired as a touring member in 1965. Oh, I almost forgot that he wrote Barry Manilow's "I Write the Songs". Great stuff, huh? Bruce does not have a rock & roll bone in his body, and contributes nothing noteworthy to the band's repertoire ("Disney Girls" was a tragic waste of vinyl groove space and almost ruined the "Surfs Up" album). Given his recent remarks, it comes as no surprise that he has been able to co-exist with fellow asshole Mike Love as part of their bogus Beach Boys road show during the past 15 years or so. At least Love has an arguable degree of talent, as a lyricist, front man, and key element of the classic BB's vocal blend. Why bring all of this up? Because by virtue of being there Johnston was in a position to spout out his stupid remarks, and not because he is a Beach Boy of any standing as are the other 4 performing members on the current tour. For remaining dates, I'm hoping that Johnston gets a loud chorus of well-deserved boos during the band intros. Some in the audience may well believe that he is indeed "fucked".

I love the album so much. I've just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life ... I figure no one is educated musically 'til they've heard that album ... I love the orchestra, the arrangements ... it may be going overboard to say it's the classic of the century ... but to me, it certainly is a total, classic record that is unbeatable in many ways ... I've often played Pet Sounds and cried. I played it to John so much that it would be difficult for him to escape the influence ... it was the record of the time. The thing that really made me sit up and take notice was the bass lines ... and also, putting melodies in the bass line. That I think was probably the big influence that set me thinking when we recorded Pepper, it set me off on a period I had then for a couple of years of nearly always writing quite melodic bass lines. "God Only Knows" is a big favorite of mine ... very emotional, always a bit of a choker for me, that one. On "You Still Believe in Me", I love that melody - that kills me ... that's my favorite, I think ... it's so beautiful right at the end ... comes surging back in these multi-colored harmonies ... sends shivers up my spine." - Paul McCartney

"I consider Pet Sounds to be one of the greatest pop LPs to ever be released. It encompasses everything that's ever knocked me out and rolled it all into one." - Eric Clapton

34. I look at the "reunion" a few different ways.
Fri May 11, 2012, 03:11 PM
May 2012

First, David Marks? He bailed out VERY early in the game (February 1962 to October 1963). He performed on the albums Surfin' Safari (1962), Surfin' USA (1963), Surfer Girl (1963), and Little Deuce Coupe (1963). He may have been one of the "original members," but you can bet your bottom dollar that if Dennis and Carl were still alive, he wouldn't have gotten his invitation in the mail. With two Wilson brothers down, he has marquee value. As far as his being a creative force in the band, that never happened.

Second, without Dennis and Carl, it's really not a reunion. ESPECIALLY Carl. Brian may have been the "creative genius" behind the band, but Carl was the heart and soul.

Third, Brian's band "The Wondermints" is INFINITELY better than the Mike Love / Bruce Johnston edition of "The Beach Boys." In the IDEAL sense, the "reunion" would have been Brian, Dennis Carl, Al Jardine, Mike Love, and any members of The Wondermints needed to fill in the sound. Instead, we got Mike, Bruce, and John Stamos.

Fourth, at least Brian gets to put his stamp on "The Beach Boys" one final time, and Al Jardine...royally and unfairly screwed over by multiple lawsuits from Mike Love...gets one final Beach Boys payday. Let's hope he deposits / invests the money wisely.

47. How Carl Wilson got into guitar, etc.
Fri May 11, 2012, 03:42 PM
May 2012

David Marks lived across the street from the Wilson clan in Hawthorne. At the age of 12, Marks began taking rock & roll guitar lessons from local musician John Maus, who later went on to greater glory as one of the Walker Brothers. Carl heard Marks playing and got bitten by the rock & roll bug, and on Marks' recommendation Carl was also tutored by Maus. So Carl and David became guitar jamming buddies and developed their own cohesive sound before the Beach Boys even existed. During this time, Brian was into the Four Freshmen sound and their intricate vocal harmonies. Dennis had not even expressed a musical interest, until he suggested that Brian write a song about surfing, which turned out to be "Surfin", a regional top 40 hit. Marks was not even on that record (Al Jardine was but he quit the group shortly thereafter). Brian eventually had the good sense to incorporate Carl & David's more aggressive rock & roll element with his own pop-oriented songwriting. Finally Brian honed his bass skills and Dennis learned drums, and the Beach Boys sound was born. Manager Murray insisted that Carl be the lead player, but they both traded leads onstage and by all accounts were a top notch performing band during this time. With his brief time in the band, David Marks tends to get overlooked but his musical influence in developing the BB's sound is on par with the others (an he's a damn fine guitarist going all the way back).

40. As is David Marks
Fri May 11, 2012, 03:21 PM
May 2012

He was there on the first 4 albums during the classic "Surf & Car Song" era, and his formidable guitar skills along with fellow axe-man Carl Wilson made them a a live surf band to be reckoned with, albeit briefly. After Marks quit in late '63 (he didn't get along with manager Murray Wilson), Alan Jardine rejoined and was the better vocalist but basically a strummer on guitar.

THANK YOU for giving props to Dave Marks. He and (guess who???) Bruce Johnston are the only two BBs that are classically trained musicians. The difference being Bruce was a rich kid who got the classical training as just another aspect of his privileged upbringing, and Dave, after being out of the Beach Boys for 8 years and struggling in several bands that went nowhere (Dave and the Marksmen, Band Without a Name, the Moon, a VERY brief, 2 weeks at most, stint with Delaney and Bonnie before being replaced by none other than Eric Clapton-Marks also turned down an offer to join Paul Revere and the Raiders), had to figuratively beg the Berklee School of Music and later the Boston Conservatory to let him in.

between the Beach Boys and the Manson Family. This was when they were all heavily into drugs. I don't know if it was mentioned in the papers, or the book Helter Skelter, which I read a few years after. I don't remember this detail, just a vague connection. They did a made-for-tv movie about the band and it may have been alluded to there. Scary, huh?

Dennis Wilson was friends with Charlie and used to hang out at the Manson ranch. Charlie wanted to get into the music scene and Dennis arranged for him to audition for Terry Mercer ( son of Doris Day) a record producer. Terry and his girlfriend at the time Candace Bergen lived in the same home as Sharon Tate and Roman Polansky having rented it previously. Mercer was not interested in Charlie's music and blew him off. At some point he returned to Mercer's home and was not treated kindly. When Charlie set out on his deadly rampage with his followers he targeted Terry Mercer but by this time it was rented by the Polanski's.

That's how I remembered it, from a book I read.

I had money until the republicans took over. And, if they get control again, I anticipate losing what little of everything else I have that is left.

You want to see "fucked", Bruce? Look in the mirror. You're about as fucked up as it gets.

I must be doing something wrong?

I totally agree if Obama loses and doesn't have to try any more than under President Romney "I'm totally fuck'd".

THEE Wilson Brother, although there is no replacing Dennis and Carl.
So that begs the question, since Johnston was originally hired on as an onstage stand-in for Brian, what's the point of including him for this tour?

I suppose The Luckiest Coattail-Rider Ever Bruce will be just fine.

I think the term for the rest of us will be "impaled and sliding down ass-first on boiling hot spikes".

haven't lost anything. so they say wait till he doesn't have to run for re-election. then when those four years are up they will be saying that hillary is a socialist and we'll all lose our guns, money and freedom. I'm pretty sure they will start saying that four years of president hillary will make president obama look like president reagan. lol.

when you sit down and think about it, it's really sad that people are that ignorant.

first off, you're not even an original member, so nobody really gives two shits what you have to say, dickwad. secondly, you're 100 years old and playing state fairs because, evidently, you have no other life skills. so fuck you, you irrelevant piece of excrement.

everything you like about the Beach Boys is because of people other than Bruce Johnston.
