Those are all reasons I like him. I'm still learning about him, which I think is a good thing.
I've been reading about him and I like what I read.
**I'm not committed to O'Malley, but I like him a lot. I want to see him get his fair shake her on DU.
He's announcing tomorrow.

(2,097 posts)Bernie Sanders is a candidate of bold, authentic progressive vision.
Hillary Clinton is a candidate who would make a strong executive and has clear leadership skills.
Bernie's the candidate of idealists; Hillary's the candidate or pragmatists. Those are both good things to be.
Suppose, however, you wanted a little of both. Maybe you'd be willing to trade a little Bernie idealism for some pragmatism and executive experience, or vice versa. Seems to me that O'Malley might be your guy.
immoderate
(20,885 posts)you limit the context to politics.
OTOH, I view Bernie as the pragmatist in terms of basic world view. I see his positions as the most influenced by reality. Meantime, Hillary will be seen as more realistic. Unless, of course, she loses. Then, the frame will shift.
Hillary is a very strategic politician, but some positions she espouses come from dogmatic and unsustainable roots. Bernie, IMO, goes by the science.

(131,105 posts)Structural reforms arent enough. We must bring fundamental change to the culture of Wall Street, beginning with real accountability. To this day, the Justice Department and financial regulators have done virtually nothing to bring criminal charges or hold leadership accountable. Legal deterrents are critical for improving the culture of Wall Street and showing that fraudulent behavior will be punished. We can solve this problem in a few ways. The first is to replace the leadership at banks that are repeat offenders. CEOs should not remain in charge of institutions that they have failed to manage properly. Second, we must appoint people to positions attorney general and SEC chair for starters who will prosecute those who commit or permit crimes. Thus far, settlements have been nothing more than CEOs using shareholder money to buy their way out of jail.
WASHINGTON -- Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley criticized the Obama administration -- albeit not by name -- on Friday for continuing to detain undocumented women and children.
"We should not be in the business of building barbed wire detention camps. Detentions are cruel, costly & against our values-esp for families," O'Malley, who is weighing a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, tweeted.
O'Malley also tweeted the link to a New York Times editorial published Friday calling for an end to the "immoral" practice of detaining families in deportation proceedings. "Let's lead with our principles & end them," he added in a second tweet.

Is Bernie Sanders the Best Candidate on Climate Change?
He was recently ranked as the Senate's top leader on global warming.

Congressional leaders just reached a deal on a "trade promotion authority" bill that would give them the power to immediately vote on the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade. This "fast track" authority would deny Congress the ability to amend yet another bad trade deal.
We must stop entering into bad trade deals that hurt middle class wages and ship middle class jobs overseas. And we certainly shouldnt be fast tracking failed deals.
Will you join me in calling on Congress to oppose "fast track" authority on the Trans-Pacific Partnership?

Chasing cheaper labor abroad will not help us build a stronger economy here at home.
Thank you,
Martin O'Malley
When I gave up on Al Gore and Elizabeth Warren as actual candidates this cycle, I started researching Martin O'Malley as an alternative. My idea was to go back to either of my first choices should they declare. But the more I learn about O'Malley, the less likely I am to prefer anyone else. Martin OMalley is the right kind of hawk, a climate hawk. He talks about it as the real national security issue it is and he has actually done something about it, as documented in the link below.
O'Malley is the rare elected official who seems genuinely motivated to address climate change. "I deal with a lot of politicians in my work as a climate advocate," says Mike Tidwell, director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network. "Martin O'Malley, more than any politician I know, really loses sleep over climate change. He is deeply concerned about climate change and his actions over the last eight years reveal that. He's pushed the envelope more than anyone I've seen. He's the kind of politician where his staff comes in and says, Here's what we propose to do,' and most politicians would say, Let's cut that down a little,' and Martin O'Malley regularly says, We can't do better than that? Push a little harder?'"

here's his resume:

The bottom quarter is good reading on O'Malley's positions and what he accomplished in Maryland.
A former Governing Magazine Public Official of the Year, Governor OMalley was re-elected in 2010. His 2013 legislative successes were described in a Baltimore Sun editorial as without many parallels in recent Maryland history.
With a balanced approach of spending cuts, regulatory reform, and modern investment in education, innovation, and infrastructure, Governor OMalley and his Administration are making better choices that are delivering better results, including:
Fastest rate of job growth in the region.
#1 ranking for best public schools in America for an unprecedented five years in a row (Education Week).
#1 ranking for holding down the cost of college tuition (College Board).
#1 ranking for innovation and entrepreneurship for two years running (U.S. Chamber of Commerce).
Under the Governors leadership, Maryland also ranks:
#1 nationally in median income,
#1 in Ph.D. scientists and researchers per capita,
#1 in Research and Development, and
#1 in businesses owned by women.
Called arguably the best manager in government by Washington Monthly magazine, Governor OMalley has cut State spending more than any previous governor in Marylands history, balancing these record cuts with targeted, modern investments in priorities like public education. He has reduced the size of government to its smallest size since 1973 (on a per capita basis) and reformed how it is managed, so that it works more efficiently and accountably. His actions to save Marylands State pension system have made it sustainable over the long term. His fiscal stewardship has nearly eliminated Marylands structural deficit. His efforts to streamline, consolidate and digitize processes like business licensing are making Maryland a better place to do business.
PS, part of a public informational archive and not bound by copyright.
The OMalley-Brown Administration has expanded health care to more than 380,000 previously uninsured Marylanders. It has reduced infant mortality to an historic low, and provided meals to thousands of hungry children as it moves forward toward its goal for eradicating childhood hunger.
The Governors policies have made strides in restoring the health of the Chesapeake Bay and saving the Bays native blue crab and oyster populations.
The OMalley Administration has secured millions of dollars in rate relief for Maryland energy consumers while jump-starting the creation of thousands of green energy sector jobs. Under Governor OMalleys leadership, Maryland led the charge for the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), the nations first cap-and-trade auction of greenhouse emissions.
Governor OMalley has cut income taxes for 86% of Marylanders and reformed Marylands tax code to make it more progressive. In addition, he signed the nations first statewide living wage law, along with some of the nations most comprehensive reforms to protect homeowners from foreclosure.
Declaring that Marylanders are bound together by the common thread of human dignity, Governor OMalley signed legislation to protect individual civil marriage rights and religious freedom, along with legislation to protect voting rights. He signed and successfully defended at the ballot box the DREAM Act, which expands the opportunity of a college education to more Marylanders.
Mother Jones magazine also called him the best candidate environmentally.
