Whether one considers Mitt Romney's actions as a young man relevant or not in 2012, the story took on a life of its own yesterday, as the public got a better sense of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee's personal background.
After the Washington Post reported that Romney, as an 18-year-old high-school senior, assaulted a younger classmate he believed to be gay, the Romney campaign started reaching out to the school's alumni to say nice things about the Republican to the media. That didn't go well -- ABC News talked to one former student who said Romney's behavior was "evil" and "like Lord of the Flies."
The controversy was made more complicated when, as Rachel explained last night, Romney reflected on the details of incidents he simultaneously claimed not to recall.
But as the day progressed, there was a sharper focus on far more contemporary events, which are clearly more relevant in the presidential race, and whether the Republican has a problem with gay people. The New York Times, for example, reported that Romney, during his Senate campaign, questioned whether gay men would make good Boy Scout leaders, implying that there's a connection between homosexuality and pedophilia.
More relevant still were Romney's actions as governor.

Does Mitt remember graduating HS: "as an 18-year-old high-school senior, assaulted a younger classmate he believed to be gay"
Mitt remembered that when he was a "wayward teenager," he tasted beer (http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=620129).
Yet he claims he's unable to remember that he assaulted someone.

(95,337 posts)You know a perfect example is Michael Vick. This is a man who served time for the abuse he did with his dogs and the dog fighting he allowed on his property. Today Michael Vick not only has show remorse for what he has done wrong but he continues to work with the Humane Society to help make awareness of the wrongs of Dogfighting. He's donated millions of dollars to the organization and countless hours. I don't expect anyone to be a Vick fan but to me the guy is trying.
If Mitt really was remorseful about what he had done he would have done something years ago to show that remorse - perhaps by championing civil rights for the LGBT community or at least fight to protect children from bullies. However from what I've ready he's not done either of those things and if anything continued to deny civil rights to the LGBT community AND we found out that he was opposed to the measures the Anti-Bully team wanted to do during Mitt's term as governor. If Mitt has changed I don't see it. Hell the fact that he fired one of his campaign advisers because he was gay and Mitt was pressured to fire him - that shows that Mitt is still a bully today.

(17,180 posts)The Twit Who Would Be King would never lower himself to have any sustained contact with the peons -- unless he wanted something from them (like the presidency).
It's a minor quibble over semantics, but it's also just a little additional wedge to help make it clear that he is NOT "one of us."
