Take part in Letter Carriers' food drive Saturday
8 May 2012

MINNEAPOLIS - Remember to place a bag of non-perishable food items near your mailbox early on the morning of Saturday, May 12, and your letter carrier will pick it up.

That’s the date for the 20th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive, organized nationwide by the National Association of Letter Carriers.

The food drive is the nation’s largest one-day food collection, helping to restock local food shelves. The metro area goal for this year’s food drive is to collect more than 1.2 million pounds of food, which will be distributed to local emergency foodshelves by Second Harvest Heartland.

Letter carriers will be picking up donated food along their routes and bringing the donations to local post offices and to waiting trucks at selected Cub Foods locations.

FULL story at link.

Although on the bags they left this year, USPS is only one of about eight sponsors of the "Stamp Out Hunger" drive: also there are AARP, Campbell's, Feeding America, AFL-CIO, and others.

The other groups all jumped onboard for exposure. But the National Association of Letter Carriers is proud to have started this tradition. We have always welcomed help from AFL/CIO and other fine organizations.

I am a proud member of NALC #47 in Denver.

Although I realize that service can vary. Food items have been stolen in past years. Thank you for caring.

I posted on this a couple of days ago, but it sunk! This board moves so fast.

I am a retired member of NALC #47 in Denver. This is so important as many children get a good portion of their food in school, but when summer comes, they dont have that safety net. Several of the food bank workers have commented on how their 'clientele' had changed from the poor to also the working poor.

Also, please don't put it out too early. Sadly, people will occasionally steal it.

Thank you all very much!

Imagine doing a physically demanding job 6 days a week, and then on your Friday having to haul an extra couple hundred pounds of canned goods at the end of the day.

If you can't do this, please donate anyway, but if you can, please do.
