Candidate A makes headlines when she is finally asked a half dozen questions by the press.

Candidate B pops a thread open in /r/AMA on reddit, cracks his knuckles and starts answering questions. I claim poetic license, he likely had a typist in reality. Policy issues and proposals discussed off the cuff and at length.

So which one is the president we need?

as far as issues go this seems to be the Sanders MO:

Interviewer: What do you think about {outrage du jour}?

Sanders: Just awful! Government should be about people! Up with people!

Interviewer: So your policy will differ from Obama's?

Sanders: Absolutely! And my constituents know that! Barack stopped listening to the people who elected him in 2008!

Interviewer: How will your policy be different from Obama's?

Sanders: I'll have to study the issue but I'm going to be better and my constituents know that!

And so on. And that's been the pattern I've observed since long before Obama entered the picture including the Clinton years. Bernie is great at voting against stuff Vermonters don't like anyway but not so good at coming up with alternatives.

I was looking through transcripts of his recent TV appearances to see how honest his pledge not to go negative on other Democrats is and I could frankly find no evidence of it. With respect to TPP he rips Barack for being an out-of-touch elitist who fell in with the CEO crowd after hoodwinking voters in 20008. And he doesn't hold back when discussing the Clinton Cash "issue" or the IWR "issue." I didn't want to get negative in the other thread about his pledge not to say that crap but basically he's said it every interview since he announced, and there have been quite a few. I gave up after about the 4th transcript but from what I read the stuff he says now is not much different than the stuff he used to say on Pacifica before he was a candidate and could be reliably counted on to rip up Bill or Barack over their latest sky-is-falling betrayal. If he really plans to run as a Democrat he hasn't gotten off to a very good start. JMHO of course!

"According to the latest CNN/ORC poll, the Obama resurgence is being fueled by the growing economy. Fifty-two percent of respondents called the U.S. economy very or somewhat good while 48% said the economy was very or somewhat poor. The President’s approval rating has increased with 18-29-year-olds (57%), women (51%), Democrats (88%), and liberal Democrats (97%).

snip//

Many supporters of the President will view his increasing approval numbers as Obama finally getting credit for the economic turnaround after pulling the country back from the brink of a potential depression when he took office, but these numbers could foreshadow a Democratic strong point in 2016. If the economy keeps growing, Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, will be able to run on maintaining and expanding the Obama economy.

The only objection I have to this thread is the knee jerk slap at another candidate. Why make the division? I'm more affected by good statements with the real words a candidate than spin.

All I want to hear is more data about the candidate to be able to talk to people I know IRL to get them to listen to Sander's ideas. I'm making the case to my liberal HRC friends, but I will NOT say one bad thing about her and I mean that, not EVER!

Because she has been a stalwart in the issues they most care about, that affect their lives. That would be like disrespecting their entire lives. I don't do that.

Let the facts and basic truths rule since negativity doesn't work anywhere IRL except among small minded people who are looking for a reason to trash someone. I don't give such time there, so why bother here, with those who may not have ever supported the DNC platform of Equality for All, which it is?

So this is our only disagreement, you have made some awesome posts recently that I appreciate a great deal.

But any sign of spin and insults, I never go for at DU, it speaks more to the character of those dissing than the candidate. We have at least 2 great ones who we can all be proud of, and then convince each other who is best, and not by insults. They are not at that low down level, are they would not worthy of votes.

That's not going to work IRL, either. AND I am NOT talking about you. Those online who really get off to that kind of stuff (there were a couple on Reddit who tried that gambit) can enjoy it for what it is if it gives them, an immediate superior feeling.

They have their reward already, they are not going online to political message boards to change minds for their alleged candidate, they are there for their own egos. Meh.

Nader never did that, and then to find that he had GOP support - OMG - I lost the respect I'd had for him for years. Totally.

I'm worried about that with Bernie. I understand fears, as we can NOT take another GOP in the White House. The Reddit thread did mention what did he think he could do with the GOP Congress?

He answered that is where the grassroots come in. Those who say they support him until the votes are counted, and then walk away, are useless and are actually setting their man up to fail and then yell 'betrayal.'

Staying into the process between elections is something the HRC volunteers have in common, they are not going away. Most of them have been involved in local politics, AFAIK in my area, and aren't going to give up their idesals.

Because it's not the candidate, it's the ideals. That is what is important to the two most discussed candidates.

It's about ideals too important to give up on, not about their own egos. Those who transfer certain personality traits to others, usually negative ones, are not fooling anyone but themselves.

And frankly your views count for a lot in my book so I'll make a real effort to sort through my various Bernie impressions and figure out if I missed a signal somewhere. Being in California I don't have regular contact with him and most of what I know has come from reading Nation articles and the like back before the internet. And of course his Pacifica appearances. I'll give him credit for one thing and that's not changing a lot in 23 years. I hope you're right about Bernie but I know you're absolutely right about spreading negativity and I'll redouble my efforts to keep it in check, as I do like to rip into pols that annoy me. Guess that's why me and DU are such a good fit LOL!

102. So an attempt at a little humor to contrast two candidates is a knee jerk slap
Wed May 20, 2015, 10:36 AM
May 2015

I'll try to do better in the future, but in this case, I really don't know if I could point out the difference in a way that you and others would not consider being a slap, so I went for a little humor.

That HRC has been a liberal stalwart on issues, is a fictional notion. There are maybe a handful of issues that she has not evolved on as it became easier to support them because the public obviously supported them. DOMA being one of the evolving viewpoints.

I am tired of politicians who look to a weather vane before stating a position. That is why many people simply do not vote. That is the main reason I stand with Bernie.

This OP is not spin, it is what happened, and HRC supporters here are claiming that what she is doing by controlling the press opportunities and vetting attendees for Q and A sessions is smart politics. I see it as a sign of weakness. I see it as not having an opinion until being told by advisers what the focus groups say the opinion should be.

That is the DLC way. The DLC way is a primary reason why we are where we are.

We finally have a cogent individual who is building a movement on his way to the white house. Who will keep that movement engaged instead of saying thanks, I got this now.

I'm dumbstruck trying to figure out how people can't get on board with that. It's like they don't want to fix anything, but just complain that someone made a little joke out of their candidate's behavior.

Good to know what your reasoning concerning what is needed is fueled by - simply winning, what the winner does is apparently irrelevant.

This reasoning helps me to understand the mind of a Reagan Democrat which is to say the mind of a Centrist Democrat.
Thank you for that, I always wondered why your ilk is so eager to vote against all our best interests thus helping to ensure our best interests are never met.

I find it strange that Centrist Reagan Democrats always appear to be financially comfortable and therefore unaffected adversly by their complete lack of ideology and principle other than winning for winnings sake.

Just look at the interest of some of the posters on DU, same old remarks over and over. We need a leader who has plans for an agenda for helping getting our economy back on track and meet the needs of our nation. Questions about the CGI, questions of the Clinton earnings, questions on Iraq, and questions on emails did not reveal any stands on the current issues. Its more obvious now than ever in my life. Bill Clinton was was first vote for Prez and Ive finally learned my lesson. Thanks, Obama. I refuse to play shiny object politics anymore. Rhetoric is bullshit. I want solutions. We need Bernie.

This is a problem, want to know what is wrong, ask Bernie, want it fixed, ask some one else.

Did you take that seriously? He's going to tax Wall St to pay for it? What's the connection?

He took Obama's idea and then proposed something that is not passable. Pie in the sky day dreams are not actual solutions. Not to me anyway.

That is different than claiming he offers no solutions.

... of passing is not a solution. He knows that is not going to happen. He is telling you what you want to hear. You hate Wall Street and love college students, so bingo, he conflates them into one all purpose package for you. Don't be naive.

I "like" and "don't like."

But since you bring it up, are you saying you don't like college students and you do like wall st?

You have a problem with lumping posters into groups and speaking of them generally. It makes you look lazy and disruptive. You are welcome for the helpful hints.

48. What do you have against retirement funds? Why not tax the capital gains?

With the tax on the trades you are letting those off the hook which receives capital gains, a capital gain is not always received on stocks traded, etc, sometimes it results in a loss.

As in his audience. He's playing to his audience. That is NOT a serious policy proposal. If you think it is I have to say I think that is very naive.

Most people want to raise taxes on the very, very wealthy and they support college education. I live in a very red area of a very red state and Obama's proposal for free college education played very well, local people whenever they mentioned it was very positive all around and you aren't factoring in future elections. I watched the interview and you act as if everything Hillary Clinton says will pass. How will Clinton get her campaign finance constitutional amendment passed? Don't be naive, she's playing to her audience.

But the bill he presented doesn't exclude them or college savings plans that are tax free. Not money markets either.

47. The one who's been owed the job for 8 years! The one who was co-president for 8 years!

May 2015

The one who's a woman! The one whose hiding represents "brilliant campaigning"! The one who is now in favor of gay rights (as of 6 years or so ago)! The one who was president Clinton's "closest advisor" (but wants to be completely distanced from NAFTA and DADT and DOMA)! The one whose husband promised Paul Ryan he'd help Ryan get Medicare cuts! Because sexism is bad!

If only your father had been born in Mexico, you'd be president now.

How dare she exceed her place. Swoosh. The sound of privilege washing away, and all the right-wing angst just flows to the surface. Oh, but it's all about policy. Of course, discussing policy would require the ability to see Clinton as an independent human being rather than a lesser extension of her husband.

88. Did I say that?

No. I did not. I responded quite particularly to what he wrote, which was all about her gender.
He gave the same kind of crap that the right gives about Obama, that people voted for him only because he was black. He decided to make it all about her gender and her marriage.

Your response is entirely disingenuous and no way addresses what I said. "Pro-drug war, pro-NSA." Care to provide any support for that? I won't hold my breath.

You already voted for a pro-war candidate in 2004. If you didn't vote for Kerry, who likewise voted for the war, you voted for Bush. So I'm not really interested in your pretensions of moral superiority, particularly when you deliberately distort my comments. And I'm guessing you voted twice for a pro-drug war, pro-NSA president with no qualms whatsoever, and a number of senators as well. Yet suddenly it matters. Right. Firstly, I don't give even the slightest shit who you or anyone else votes for, but when I see bullshit I will call it out.

Since when is it so vitally important that a candidate take questions from the corporate media that is criticized every single day on this website?

Answering questions in an online discussion is hardly "off the cuff."

Reddit, the home of MRAs, pro-rape groups, and every other hate group out there?
Whereas Clinton is actually listening to voters. What kind of candidate actually listens?

But Reddit. That's what qualifies someone to be president.

Can you imagine a more inane reason for voting for someone? I try to make a point of not passing judgment on the reasons people give for voting because really it's their business, as is their choice of candidate, but when they try to make a public issue out of someone's going on Reddit, that's just sad.

... In the primary I'll take candidate A. In the general I'll take whichever one wins the primary. As far as Clinton supporters go, how many here didn't already know the answer to that question?
if Bernie reads DU l"d venture a guess that this is his reaction to much of the support he receives. A candidates own words should be the cornerstone of the support he/she receives.
