Both were dairy farmers from upstate NY. Within two days they were assigned to milk the cows that had been abandoned
and crying from their over full udders.
Uncle Lou went on to lose part of his leg (his calf) at the Battle of the Bulge.

Never thought about the farm animals in the warzone.

My uncle came in 3 days after as an MP. He later lost an eye by a broken beer bottle trying to break up a fight between a couple of drunken GI's.
