According to a lady on Thom Hartmann show in California if you get SNAP and then get a job you have to pay it back? I guess that could become a new GOP meme if you get government assistance like UI, welfare, food stamps et al you have to pay it back with interest once you go back to work?
Interesting. No link I know of. But this thing on food stamps just came up on Thom Hartmann show.

(39,215 posts)apply the same to all states because it is a federal program. The state administers it according to federal laws. It is Medicaid that must be repaid out of the estate.
The problem is that years ago many state programs did require repayment. After the transfer to the federal levels this ended for everything but Medicaid.
But even now a lot of people think that any help from the government must be paid back. I was on a board for weatherization and you would be surprised how many older people turned down help because they were afraid.

(417 posts)I believe there is a little disclaimer on there somewhere that says you MAY have to pay it back, but I have never had this enforced on me or anyone that I know of. I also think it is more for unearned income. Like for example if you are collecting SNAP and then aunt Mabel dies and leaves you a million dollars they might come looking to collect. Not so likely if you get hired on someplace making $10.00/hr
Speaking from my personal experience, most case workers want to see people get out of poverty (Yes, I know some folks have had totally different experiences) Forcing people to pay off assistance costs will just end up with people reapplying for assistance again as they will never be able to get ahead or save anything.

Most programs, including Soc. Sec. pay you in May for what was due in April.
The old welfare program worked that way, too.
So you owed a month back of your check.
If I die this month, Mr. dixie will get a bill for my last Soc. Sec. payment.

An early form to sign and have notorized is a list of aid programs where reimbursement to the state is expected.
Her illness was rather short and I was able to avoid the money sucking clowns from the state.
