DU has become painfully slow to load.
I will not pay another $45 for this crap service. I click my DU bookmark, then I can go make a pot of coffee. And I PAY for this?
I love you Skinner and Elad and Dave and whatever. I will not follow you spiraling down the drain. I'd rather look at ads than pay to look at the spinning beach ball.

(146,324 posts)You may be having a problem on your end. There have been occasions when DU was having trouble, but they've been short-lived and infrequent. For me, pages load quickly today. Check your system.
Also, if you're using Chrome, it has a habit of updating its software without informing users, and that update is incredibly greedy about using resources. Whenever the Internet slows down for me, a Chrome update in progress is usually the problem. I keep Task Manager minimized, so I can monitor resource usage.

(31,464 posts)DU take forever. Sometimes a can re-click the bookmark and it will load a bit faster. CU loads faster, but then, they only have five people reading it.

(146,218 posts)One thing to keep in mind is its going to load a lot slower if you drop your membership, because then you will get all those ads.
Like I said, I'm not having a problem but some other sites load really slowly for me, sometimes not at all.

It's been like this for at least the past several months, on three separate computerss w/different browsers and ISPs. So I know it's not me!

(37,573 posts)my own trick is that if it doesn't load after about a minute. I stop it and try again and it usually pops right up.
petronius
(26,602 posts)2-3 seconds I hit it again, and then it usually opens immediately. Without the second try, it can hang up for a while...
(And in case the Admins peruse this thread and it's relevant, I'm using Firefox, with Adblock Plus and Ghostery. I also have the FF pop-up blocker and 'don't track me' settings enabled.)
and it only happens here.

(29,414 posts)and the latest version of Opera here at work (Opera 29.0.) I thought a change of ISPs and browser versions would make a difference, but it hasn't.
So, my trick is not to hit the same link again, but a different one, and then hit the previous one again. Only then does it load quickly and properly.

(31,464 posts)Several others have reported similar issues. Skinner himself has reported issues. Every other web site and every other aspect of my computer works perfectly fine, no issues. But DU is slow as dog shit. Therefore, obviously it must be my computer and not an issue with DU. That makes sense.
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)Yeah, DU does have issues from time to time but probably 90% of the time it is the fastest loading website I access, Salon, Amazon, Yahoo, Ebay and lots of others are all slower most of the time, mainly because they have a lot more graphics and graphics are slower to load.
Atman
(31,464 posts)So it isn't the "graphics." I guess after being a member since 2002 and having owned computers since the Mac SE was state of the art, I've just forgotten how they work. Some of the comments here are amazing! Like, really? I don't know how DU or my own computers work?
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)My connection isn't all that great, it's DSL to start with and the link I'm usually on also goes over a hundred yards on wifi after negotiating the copper cable pair.
MADem
(135,425 posts)towards YOUR end. It could be your provider--maybe they've got a Republican working in their bowels who is having a laugh--or maybe there is some setting in your computer, either your antivirus or malware program, that is reacting to some of the ads that run on the DU site and is blocking you out. Why not, instead of getting all shitty and mad with me, and giving me the like I am being "mean" to you when I'm not, install an ad blocker and see if that works for you?
When "several others" and "Skinner" have "reported issues" they have been temporary and transient and resolved. You seem to be having an ongoing problem. That leads me to believe you've got something in YOUR computer that is causing the issue. Either that, or your internet provider is throttling you for some reason. Perhaps you might try rolling your computer back to when you didn't have these problems, and see if there's a difference? If there is, it's you.
Atman
(31,464 posts)Any other suggestions?
Hey, some days it works fine. Some days I sit and watch the wheel spin around. Many others have had the same issue with DU, and has been noted on this thread. As I stated before, no other website, nothing else on my computer, gives me this problem. Do you think I'm stupid? If this was happening on every web site, on every application, of course I'd look into it. It's only happening with DU. That is the entire point. How is that so hard to understand?
MADem
(135,425 posts)Why are you being so nasty and combative? Who is calling you "stupid" and why is your first "go-to" an assumption that I or anyone would think that of you? Why are you snarling at someone who is actually TRYING to HELP you? Jesus!
Maybe you can find an answer at this link--here's someone with a similar problem, unable to load ONLY one page--and no, it wasn't the website's fault: http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-92145-one-certain-site-will-not-load-help
There are a lot of suggestions at that link. Maybe one of them will work for you.
If the problem was with DU, there would be a zillion people griping. There aren't.
Atman
(31,464 posts)But I assume you meant that as hyperbole, since there are nowhere close to a zillion people signed up to DU.
Lots and lots of people griping. So you're not. Yay you.
Now, for the umpteenth time...I have no issues with any other web sites. None. But I see several posters here with the same complaint...DU loads painfully slow, it it loads at all.
So, you have no such problem. Yay, you. I have no such problem with any other web site EXCEPT DU. So I guess you're just awesome. You got the special Skinner Love. I'm just relaying my experience. I can log onto many other web sites and they all function just fine. I can log onto DU and have to click two or three times to get the front page to load.
Obviously it's because I'm an idiot and don't know how to click a bookmark. Asshole.
MADem
(135,425 posts)that brief period awhile back when DU was having troubles--that was a very constrained period of time though.
I don't understand why you are calling me an "asshole" for trying to help you. Did you even look at that link I offered you? It talked about a person having an issue with JUST ONE website--and some of the solutions offered had to do with that person's COMPUTER.
So, it CAN happen that a person can go to every other website without a problem, but can go to a website that requires a username and password, and HAVE TROUBLE with the site. That's part of what that link I provided was talking about.
I am not calling you an idiot, either, so stop with the self-flagellation and unnecessary anger directed at me. I'm trying to help you. You're making it really difficult, too.
Or is it that you don't want help, and you just want someone to serve as your whipping boy? I'm starting to suspect that might be the case.

(80,708 posts)I've noticed some loading problems in the past couple months, obviously there was that couple days early this month or so where it was down a bunch.
But I also do a lot of posting from my ipad, and anyone who has dealt with Apple's "what the fuck were they thinking" IOS updates in the past year or two, knows what they have done to wireless connectivity, namely, taken something that worked fairly well and fucked it up twelve ways to Sunday.
So sometimes I think it might just be me.

(1,884 posts)I have two computers, one a Linux machine. Google, 1 gig Fiber. Ghostery on both machines. I do not see the ads on either machine.
It can take several minutes for threads over 75 responses to load.
Both machines have Firefox. The Win7 also has Google Chrome. Same problem. DU is by far the slowest. Most sites load fine.
At another place I sometimes go to, they have AT&T Uverse. 12 meg tops. Same problem. DU is always slower. DI is never as slow, even on the occasional long thread. So no, the problem is not on my end.
What I am wondering is, what if somewhere along the line, someone is throttling the feed? That would explain how some DU'ers don't have a problem and others do. Does the location in the US have anything to do with this?
