Being against abortion, except for rape, is the worst position to have on abortion.
This seems to be a common position among "moderate" conservatives. It is to be against abortion except in cases of rape. I guess they see this as a compromise position, as it seems cruel to make a women carry her rapist's baby. And it certainly is. However, this position makes one thing clear. The law isn't meant to save a fetus. It is meant to judge the purity of the woman. If the woman gets pregnant through consensual sex and has an abortion, she is "morally impure" accordingly to this view. She deserves to be "punished with a baby" (which is what they got on Obama so much for saying years ago, when its really them who want to do it.) However, if a woman gets pregnant through rape, they don't view the women as "impure" (to be fair there are some sick fucks who will say she deserved it) and she can have an abortion because she doesn't deserve the "punishment of a baby." This position makes it very clear that a baby is punishment and "impure" women deserve the punishment by law.
I used to think being against abortion except in cases of rape was an internally inconsistent position. It is if you think the purpose of abortion bans is to protect the fetus. However that's not its purpose. The purpose is to punish a woman for supposedly being "sexually impure." Therefore being against abortion, except in cases of rape, is a consistent position if you are anti woman. Therefore, we need to start calling politicians out on this. Ask politicians who state this position why they think its appropriate to have the law punish women for sex. Also ask them why they think a fetus created through rape is less "human" than a fetus created through consensual sex. I personally don't think the government should force women to have any baby. However, if the government makes these judgements, the ultimate worst parameter to use is the sexual purity of the woman. However, this is parameter of judgement millions of people want, by saying abortion should be banned except in cases of rape.
