Some Vermont legislators have a pretty compelling argument: If the state wont legalize marijuana, then how about we prohibit all recreational drugs?
State Reps. Jean OSullivan, a Democrat, and Christopher Pearson, a Progressive (really!), have filed a bill to prohibit alcohol consumption, with penalties that match those currently in place for marijuana possession and sale. The bills language is quite serious about this:
A person 21 years of age or older who possesses a small amount of alcohol may be ticketed to a monetary penalty of up to $500.00. Possession of larger quantities of alcohol, as well as cultivation, distribution, and sale of alcohol, will be subject to criminal penalties ranging from one day to 30 years imprisonment and fines ranging from $1.00 to $1,000,000.00.

A word about Representative Pearson: Wonkette notes (in seeming astonishment) that he's REALLY a Progressive. What they're referring to is that he's not a dem or republican but a member of the country's only viable 3rd party with elected members of both the House and Senate, as well as a Prog elected to state wide office. Here's their platform. Don't you wish this was the Dem National Platform?
