Storms shied away from Nebraska and Iowa during March, delivering the two states a near-record dry month and central Nebraska its driest March in 121 years of record-keeping.
No other spot in the lower 48 states was record dry in March.
The dry conditions have contributed to a brisk fire season, deterioration in winter wheat and a slow start to tornado season. Additionally, the headwaters for the Platte and Missouri Rivers have seen below-normal peaks in snowpack, which means theres reduced likelihood of widespread flooding.
Nebraska had its second-driest and Iowa its third-driest March on record and both states have been off to a top 10 dry start to the year, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. South Dakota was record dry for January-March, according to NOAA.
