Teacher allegedly ‘knocked out cold’ by a student’s mother

A teacher was allegedly attacked by a parent in the hall of a Long Island middle school — and in a disturbing surveillance photo can be seen knocked out cold.

Teacher Catherine Engel­hardt was pummeled by a parent and a 14-year-old at the Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School in Hempsted Wednesday, police said.

“It’s not like I thought a parent would do something, but I knew something violent was going to happen,” Engelhardt told WABC/Channel 7 from her home.

“I’ve warned them time and again that the children have no respect for adults. Yes, I fear for my safety. They can’t control the kids.”

3. Hempstead is an absolute mess. It's poor, black and an urban slice of suburbia, if that makes sense.

It's very near places like Glen Cove where wealthy white people wear fur coats and lots and lots of golf courses.

A lot of people in Hempstead rent, so tax base isn't strong for a decent school system.

My brother taught for a limited time in a similar school in Brooklyn.

The kids are violent and difficult to restrain.

It's an absolute mess.

My heart goes out to the teacher and all the kids who probably won't get the help they are in desperate need of.

7. Roosevelt HS in Hempstead

The state took that over years ago because of falling grades. A childhood friend of my husband's taught Math there back in the 60s to 80s. Very, very bad even then, he said, with the gangs, drugs, etc.

The man was about 6'6", blue-eyed, and blond haired. If you put him in a uniform, he would have looked like an SS Officer. Honestly. lol He was also a gun enthusiast who had served in Nam.

He told us at the beginning of every school year, he would introduce himself to the new class, which included talking about his "hobby". He brought in his bulls eye sheets from target practice. This target I shot with my ----. This target I shot with my -----, etc. For effect he used a ruler, slapping it, and clicking his heels. They must have thought he was either bad ass, crazy, or both.

He said if they acted up during the year, he would take out his targets, and make them count bullet holes. I suppose you could say he used FEAR to control them, but also in a way that they would understand.

As someone else said, you could leave this area, go a few miles, and see million dollars homes in Oyster Bay. Go a few miles in another direction and you have the very middle class areas of Hicksville (Billy Joel grew up) and Levittown (my daughter lives there).

9. My friends in high school lived on border of Roosevelt. Yes, issues go back decades

in both towns.

Roosevelt is more "suburban". More trees and houses.

Hempstead is a lot of cement and roadways.

I hate the way school taxes and levied and distributed.

12. I'm not saying violence is ever right, but what had she done to the child?

All the article says is the mother was there because the teacher had "grabbed" her child earlier in the day. Again, I stress that violence is not the right way to deal with this stuff, but is this particular teacher one that commonly "grabs" kids or lays hands on them?

I'll admit freely that there was a 1st Grade teacher that I had serious issues with when my daughter was in her class. My husband and I both met with her a few times to express our concerns, and the crap never abated. Finally, my kid came home from school one day crying, begging me not to force her to go back because she was afraid. When I started asking questions I found out that my kid had seen the old bitch dragging kids around by the arm, or slamming them into chairs. At that point I went to the administration and got REAL direct. Direct to the point that I offered to call child services or else sit in the classroom myself unless they got rid of her.

Long story short, she was ready to retire and was protected by tenure. I ended up sitting in the back of the classroom for the balance of the school year and the abuse stopped. It was an illuminating experience, to say the least. Oddly enough, AFTER the school year ended, I had (literally) half of the parents of kids in the class who told me they had also had issue with that woman and had been given the high hat by the Administrator.

Again, I stress that it is never right to physically assault anyone, but I understand how it can happen sometimes. I have been THAT mad.

but hauling your teenage niece into the school and jumping the teacher is not the way to solve a problem.
