Edit to add a trailer.
This afternoon Marta and I went to the theater to see Woman in Gold. We loved it. I can't say enough about this movie. Some reviews were so so. Marta cried more than once. I do share something with one of the Austrian characters in the film. No spoilers from me. Just go see it.
This would be a great double feature to run with "Monuments Men" Marta bought that book and is now 1/2 way through that.
There were 6 couples in the theater all over the age 50. I guess this won't get a young audience.

(32,342 posts)The trailer makes me cry, I expect I'll need a few hankies for the film itself.

(63,912 posts)they were goddamn complicit in what the Nazis did to the Jews in Austria...those SOBs. I love going to Europe but I cannot go to Vienna because of what they did...
The film is not here yet but as soon as it comes I'm going!
EDIT to add: this case went to SCOTUS here in this country! See it for its fantastic journey thru the courts system both in Austria and the U.S.
It is a fabulous story!

(41,145 posts)work and speeches. Also have 'The Rape of Europa', Lynn Nicholas' scholarly book from the late 90s. But I'm livid this happened and it was held back so many decades by many US institutions involved including ones where I worked like NGA, the National Archives.
It was too many years for all this to come out, too many people lost and suffered. Heck, even the magnificent WWII Memorial in DC took 50+ years before a place could be found, etc. I would like for my father to have visited it, since he helped fight and liberate Europe 70 years ago as a brave young officer.

(63,912 posts)Ieven read her book twice because I was concerned that I was overreacting the first time I read it!
What an outrage! I am so glad this movie has come out. God bless George Clooney!
And oh how wonderful is your Dad who did what he did to help in theliberation!

(99,659 posts)Alan was on the set everyday of every episode when it was shooting. Marta communicates with him still. Here is a photo I took of Marta with Alan. About 2/3 of the way down: http://www.steveandmarta.com/graveyards/tzcon2002.htm
We got ready to meet Alan Brennert for brunch. Alan drove us to his favorite restaurant, Cha Cha Cha, where we had a great lunch and a great discussion on all the shows he's worked on, and what he's doing now; we also talked about the NTZ, which he has said is still his favorite experience. Not everyone would take time out of their Sunday to meet fans, so I very much thank him for doing so.
I look dreadful in this shot, but Alan looks great.

(3,732 posts)It also made me sad for how many irreplaceable great works of civilization must have been lost.

(63,912 posts)which is equally exciting. So MUCH was saved! It was inspiring! And the U.S.A. was in the forefront with Britain not far behind...

(3,732 posts)when you read the book you realize how little was actually saved.

(63,912 posts)rome was an "open city" but Florence was at risk...whatta story that was! The Allies really went large on that...jeez, we came close to a real melt down...awful to imagine...

(3,732 posts)you learn about US soldiers and personnel cashing in for themselves and smuggling art and objects home (some still tied up in lawsuits), as well as occasions the Soviets got there first.

(2,682 posts)(Comcast On Demand) which was about ANOTHER painting, stolen from the home of a woman, which found its way, (illegally, of course) to the same Austrian Gallery at the Belvedere Palace in Vienna that Woman in Gold was also hanging. The Gallery fought as hard to keep the painting as it did to keep Woman in Gold.
Portrait of Willy was a documentary and was more clinical in its approach to the legal steps taken about ownership of the portrait.

(10,429 posts)Wonderful movie, except for Ryan Reynolds. He shows the same lack of acting ability that he had in "Green Lantern". Tatiana Maslany deserves to be nominated for an Oscar. Of course, she won't get that nomination either.
