A New York City woman is facing felony charges after getting married 10 times without divorcing any of her husbands, a criminal complaint alleges.
Liana Barrientos, 38, is charged with offering a false instrument after allegedly obtaining marriage certificates with 10 men between 1999 and 2010. She never filed for a single divorce, the complaint alleges.
The complaint alleges that Barrientos filed for marriages in different towns each time, mainly in Westchester County and on Long Island.
Her first marriage was filed in Eastchester in 1999. During an 10-month period in 2001 and 2002, the complaint alleges, she applied for and received eight more marriage certificates.

(62,444 posts)I've been wondering where she went.
She told me she was stepping out for some groceries, and that was 15 years ago.

(25,704 posts)Many times when a woman is accused of a crime she is called mentally ill, yet men are just called criminals.
I think she is a good, old fashioned grifter.

(12,778 posts)It's quite possible. I wonder how the men she married fared financially.
There is definitely a double standard when it comes to how men who commit crimes are treated versus how women are treated. Men are definitely treated more harshly, while women often get the benefit of the doubt. Still, it just seems to me that anyone who marries ten people in a decade is nuts.

(25,704 posts)They are among the easiest crimes to prove. You put on one witness who identifies the perp and states they had a gun and took the money. Modern video makes it easier.
Prosecuting a dui is an order of magnitide more difficult.
No one weeps for the poor armed robbers. As they should not, armed robbery turns into murder really easily, especially when the robber is drunk, high and stupId.
Maybe my problem is noticing things. I notice that every time a woman is accused of a crime some folks will say she was bullied or mentally ill.
Noticing thungs may cause others to be disturbed. Folks don't like to be disturbed.
