GoFundMe Tells Supporters Of Accused Killer Cop To Go Away
The fundraising website GoFundMe has taken down a campaign aimed at raising funds for Michael Slager, the South Carolina policeman who was recorded shooting an unarmed black man.
The crowd-funding website GoFundMe is not available for supporters of former North Charleston, South Carolina police officer Michael Slager.
Kelsea Little, public relations manager for GoFundMe confirmed that administrators have permanently removed a campaign attempting to raise money for Slager's defense. Officer Michael Slager, 33, has been charged with the murder after a video was made public, showing the former police officer shooting 50-year-old Walter Scott (photo left) multiple times in the back as Scott tried to flee.
Ms. Little declined to discuss the manner in which the campaign ran afoul of the site rules due to privacy protections. She told reporters GoFundMe can only discuss the details of campaigns with the organizers," but the owner of this @DefendMichaelS Twitter account set up to raise funds for Slager seems to suggest GoFundMe has not given the campaign a firm reason for the refusal, tweeting:
Meanwhile, supporters of Michael Slager, who say he is innocent until proven guilty and deserves a defense, have found a new domain for their fundraising efforts:
As of this noon today, the page had raised $393.00

But, I'm not too fond of providing a way for bigots to get money either!

Absolutely nothing.
Hell, I'm getting Google Play refunds (ordered by FTC) larger than this!

(6,928 posts)He deserves a trial and a defense attorney. He just should not expect any support from me or many others. If there had been a union, would it have supported him since he was fired? I was just wondering.

(652 posts)He's caught on tape shooting an unarmed man in the back and then planting evidence to try and frame the poor guy he murdered. He deserves a chance to defend himself same as anyone else, but I can't even imagine how he could actually justify what he did. The tape is damning, and there doesn't seem to be much room for doubt.
Edit: And just to be clear, I'm not suggesting you support this cop, but my comments are to support GoFundMe telling this group to drop dead.

Due process deals with the administration of justice and thus the due process clause acts as a safeguard from arbitrary denial of life, liberty, or property by the Government outside the sanction of law. The Supreme Court of the United States interprets the clauses however more broadly because these clauses provide four protections: procedural due process (in civil and criminal proceedings), substantive due process, a prohibition against vague laws, and as the vehicle for the incorporation of the Bill of Rights."
