Fear is what governs the American people today.

Sadly we have the warhawks like McCain rattling the swords over Russia, Syria and Iran. Obama tries to do something that actually appears to lessen the tension in the Middle East and he gets blasted from the right.

Oh well, peace would disrupt the US economy, would it not?

wasn't good for the economy because the weapons don't generate more income they are destroyed.
If you build a car and sell it. Money changes hands. The buyer uses it and buys gas and repairs. Money changes hands again. But you build a tank and it doesn't create more wealth. It is destroyed over time without it being used in any way that money changes hands.

lately the military has been giving these items to local governments and police departments. Upkeep allows the manufacturer to continue making money and if things get bad then the local governments have tanks and helicopters to stop any riots.

Probably the best one. Look what human beings have managed to do because of our fear of death for example. We want single payer health care because...people are dying!
