They were becoming a disincentive to watch TV.

either in its current form or with new spots, it has been extremely successful ...

If the ads were so successful why didn't I know what they were trying to pitch?

I thought successful ads were supposed to brand the product in your brain.

Perhaps the ads failed because I only know Rob Lowe's name in passing.

Most certainly: that excedrine ad where the child screams at the top of her lungs at her brother to "be quiet! Mom has a headache!"

I sincerely have NEVER wanted to hurt a child or any innocent being in my life, but that ad makes me gasp and (almost) rethink that.

On a similar vein, I note they have toned down the "crazy singing at the wheel" and "crazy laugh" Tena commercial... Now you just see the visuals and hear the actual song "Finally".... That one didn't really irritate me so much as I thought it was a little OTT.

I thought the first was kinda funny, but then the were just beating it into the ground.
I guess they weren't very effective if I can't remember what they were claiming.

At the end of the commercials, the normal, DirecTV version of Lowe says, "Don't be like this me. Get rid of cable and upgrade to DirecTV."

In most cases, the Better Business Bureau National Advertising Division review board agreed with Comcast and urged DirecTV to pull or modify the ads.

For instance, the NAD found no supporting evidence to substantiate the "far less attractive" Rob Lowe commercial's claim that DirecTV has better picture and sound quality than cable. "Scrawny arms" Rob Lowe claimed DirecTV has more sports programming, but the NAD said that was also unsupported.

The review board also said DirecTV failed to explain how it arrived at its customer service claims. The NAD even took issue with the commercials' statement "don't be like this me," because it "conveyed a comparative and unsupported superiority message."
It did, however, find that DirecTV's message of 99% signal reliability and "up to 1080p" picture were solid.

...Now, embarking on an O'Reilly project isn't necessarily a mark of political conservatism. Noted liberal Tom Hanks narrated Killing Lincoln on NatGeo in February, for instance. Lowe, of course, starred in The West Wing, a show from outspoken liberal (and Maureen Dowd ex-boyfriend) Aaron Sorkin. But Lowe hasn't always been so clear about his viewpoint: Even if he's interested in selling himself as a political junkie of sorts, he may or may not have been leaning outwardly right of late. After being considered a "longtime Democratic activist"—his sex scandal was associated with the Democratic National Convention in 1988—Lowe joined Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign in 2003. More recently, he's made some comments on his Twitter account that might imply he may not be all that liberal. A tweet about Benghazi in September, for instance, got Twitchy all excited...
