GOP Lawmaker Says It's Harder To Get A Vasectomy Than An Abortion

A Republican Tennessee lawmaker on Tuesday said that he thinks it's harder for a man to get a vasectomy than it is for a woman to get an abortion.

"Men go through a lot more stringent process to have a vasectomy than a woman does, I would assume, on an abortion," state Sen. Todd Gardenhire said, according to a video posted by the Huffington Post.

Gardenhire made the remarks during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing while discussing a bill that would require a 48-hour waiting period for women seeking an abortion, according to the Nashville Post.

....

Gardenhire, who supports the bill, then decided to begin discussing his own experience with a vasectomy.

"Having personal experience in that field and also having one reversed I want to promise you that when ... you start talking to a doctor about them whacking on you down there, you want to wait a while and think about it," he said, adding that a doctor discusses the vasectomy with the patient before scheduling the procedure.

I just had to go and look that up.....

•Risks with vasectomy are few. No death has ever been attributed to this procedure. On the other hand, tubal ligation, a frequently performed surgical sterilization procedure in women, is associated with no fewer than 20 deaths per year.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, complications from unsafe abortions in the developing world contribute to 47,000 preventable deaths each year.

It is a important to note race in this shooting, because if the scenario was such that a white cop was chasing after a white man, there likely would never have been a shot fired.

Conservatives don't like to acknowledge there is a racial factor in these tyes of shootings, even through the evidence is mounting.

and yet he's eager to deny women the same rights that he takes for granted. His astounding ignorance is rivaled only by his antiquated, medieval views on women's equality.

The vascectomy thing really is a pain in the ass, and I had to go through it. When I visited a urologist to start the process for mine, I was informed that my wife would have to SIGN A PERMISSION FORM before I could get it done. I was thirty-five freaking years old and already had THREE children, and the guy still wanted me to get my wife's permission. I was so offended that I found another urologist, who more "reasonably" wanted ME to sign a legal form stating that I had discussed it with my wife and that we were both in agreement to have it done. As it turned out, this sort of thing is fairly standard.

My daughter and her boyfriend have both decided that they want to live childfree, and my daughter was recently complaining about the fact that the boyfriend has now seen SIX doctors, who all flat-out refused to perform a vasectomy on a 25 year old unmarried man.

But, for all my gripes about the way these are handled, the FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCE is the force of law. There is no law saying that men need to get permission, or that young and unmarried men can't have them at all. There is no punishment for men who get them without permission, and no prison for the doctors who perform them. It is "standard practice" for a variety of different reasons, but none of those reasons involve legislators. If a particular doctor decides that he will perform them on anyone who asks (and there are MANY who do), then he is free to do so.

The GOP doesn't want to impose the vasectomy model on women. They want to criminalize abortions, and throw the women who get them, and the doctors who perform them, into prison cells. The two models are utterly incomparable.

Wait, you mean this isn't what every other man has to go through? Maybe I need to change doctors.
