When people tell the Texas Sons of Confederate Veterans spokesman Marshall Davis that his groups flags are an enduring symbol of the Souths savage history of slavery, he has an answer ready for them.
The American flag flew over a slave nation for over 100 years, Davis says. The Confederate flag flew over a slave nation for four years. By comparison, the American flag is 25 times more a slave flag.
Not surprisingly, the Sons of Confederate Veterans believe the controversy swirling around the memorial to Confederate war dead that theyre building in the east Texas city of Orange is overblown, if not entirely unfounded.
Construction on the $50,000 monument near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive began in 2013, despite strenuous objections from some locals.
Those objections recently resurfaced after the Sons of Confederate Veterans announced that they have ordered eight custom-made poles for Confederate battle flags that will, Davis said, increase the visibility of the monument alongside Interstate 10, not far from the street named after King, the slain civil rights leader.

the reason for secession was preserving slavery where it existed and spreading it to the territories, which Lincoln had run against.* You can dress that up all you want as simply states'rights under the Bill of Rights, which was also the rationale for things like Jim Crow and, from people like Goldwater and his successor, McCain, not recognizing Martin Luther King Day. But, the only state right extolled in the Articles of Secession was slavery.
The USA was not founded for that sole purpose. Contrast the Declaration of Independence with the Articles of Secession. Even taking the Declaration of Independence with many grains of salt, as you should take it, it is not all about slavery and only slavery. The Articles of Secession are.
*On edit: Without checking, my recollection is that Lincoln had run against spreading slavery to the territories and not against slavery in general. My original sentence was ambiguous on that point and I can't swear to it. If that particular point matters to you, please check it.
Also, the Articles of Secession for each of the seceeding states were identical, or substantially similar to, the Articles of Secession of South Carolina. You can check those online.

(3,011 posts)The Confederate Flag has flown over a slave-free nation for a grand total of 0 years.
The US flag has been flown over a slave-free nation longer then it has a slave holding nation - The same cannot be said of the Confederate flag.
The US flag is infinite times more a symbol of freedom then the Confederate Flag, despite its past.

(10,142 posts)but I suppose these Texans don't have no truck with Lincoln either. Or history. Or math - from 1776 to 1865 is 89 years. Not to mention the ~150 years since the passage of the 13th Amendment.

(3,920 posts)While we are at it, the Lone Star Flag of the State of Texas is a flag of slavery. The motive for Texas' secession from Mexico -- which was the template for the Confederate secession -- was Mexican attempts to suppress slavery in Texas, according to Mexican law.
