Move over Victoria's Secret. Lane Bryant just won the prize for sexiest campaign of 2015.
The plus-size brand launched its #ImNoAngel advertisements on Monday, featuring models Ashley Graham, Marquita Pring, Candice Huffine and more. The women, styled in Lane Bryant's exclusive bra collection Cacique, define "sexy" in numerous ways during the ad. They're also using social media to further challenge conventional beauty standards.

Kudos to Lane Bryant!!!
I once read that only 1% of women are the size of professional models. Why should society expect all women to aspire to look like a model?
At one point in my life I knew some of the top models in NYC. The one thing they had in common with the rest of us was their insecurity about their looks. Even they didn't think that they were attractive enough.
Does society expect all men to look like GQ models? I doubt it....

Thanks!

I just had my fourth head surgery at Stanford last week where they put a 2.5 x 1.5 inch implant in my skull!
Complications from an aneurism surgery last May.
Apparently, I refuse to die.
Dogs R good!

(30,250 posts)I don't post that much here anymore. The nastiness finally go to me.
I hope that you're alright. Thank goodness you survived the aneurysm. I just thought of the local ABC affiliate reporter, Lisa Colagrossi, who died on March 19 of an aneurysm at age 49. Sad story.
I'm so glad that you and the dogs are doing well.

Be who you are. I love you that way.

A hearty R&K.

(7,947 posts)And yes, there are many things that society expects men to be, do, or look like.

(30,250 posts)Whatever the look happened to be in their era. Women's fundamental function in life was to be attractive enough to catch a husband and birth children. The most attractive women would have a better chance to make a good match.
Men's primary requirement was to be a good provider, looks were secondary.

(30,250 posts)My point is that a size 0 should not be what all women have to aspire to be considered attractive and successful in life. We all come in all shapes and sizes, just like men.
I also think that the same applies to age. Ageism is just as bad. Personally, there are some older men who make my heart go pitter-patter.

(30,252 posts)The woman I'm currently seeing is my age.
And yes, if I have to choose between a woman with "some extra padding" who knows how to kiss and a woman with an hourglass figure who will only allow a peck on the cheek, I'll probably take the "fat girl."

Where is the visible cellulite? Where are the large stomachs? These women are what I would call "Hollywood Large." So no, they aren't the 1% of women who look like supermodels, but neither are they representative of the remaining 99%.

(30,250 posts)I'm not blind to the fact that they're are a business, but at least they are challenging the notion that women parading in lingerie have to be the size of the models that Victoria's Secret uses in their campaigns.

(30,250 posts)Looks are ephemeral. Obviously we have to feel attracted to our partners; but intelligence, respect, a sense of humor and a kind heart win every time. At least they do in my book.

(348 posts)but I do know men don't expect all women to look like models. Any pressure there comes from other women imho.
I do find it amusing though when people self proclaim what is sexy or beautiful. Don't think it works that way.
Beacool
(30,250 posts)Some of the nastiest comments about women that I have heard have indeed come from other women.
I never understood that. I'm a big supporter of the "sisterhood". I like seeing other women break glass ceilings and achieve goals. I also don't see the point in envying other women's looks. There will always be someone more beautiful and younger than me, that's life.

(81,419 posts)Glad you're here! We used to have this discussion in high school - who are you really dressing for? Boys? The other girls (especially your friends)? Yourself? Girls in all-girl schools tended to dress for each other, and there was always this ongoing competition - who had the best clothes, the best accessories, the most chic, the newest, the coolest/trendiest, the most, the designer labels and which of those outranked which. Who could shop at Neiman Marcus and who went to Sears, or even to thrift shops. With no boys around, that's all there was.
By the way, lo these many years later, the MOST chic person I know is my best friend who only has enough money to shop at thrift stores. The stuff she finds is AMAZING! She always looks like a million bucks! She's been on MY Best Dressed List ever since we first met.

Supermodels are....well, I can't even think of anything clever to say, but most "Supermodels" need 500cc's of Country Gravy, STAT!
Skin and bones ain't sexy.
*edit*
Also, too...I'm totally a GQ Model...true story.

(15,805 posts)Yes, normal American women look like them. Maybe most of 'em... certainly almost every woman I know looks normal, just like them. If I had young girls, I'd want them to think of themselves as beautiful and happy to be just as they are, normal looking, confident and empowered, no matter what dress size they wear, or what the scale says, they are normal.
Beacool
(30,250 posts)The average US women's size is 14. So these women are the normal American women, not the waif sized women on the catwalks.

(30,250 posts)Leonard Nimoy was not only everyone's favorite Vulcan, but he was also a Renaissance man. His interests were varied, acting was just one of them, he was also a film director, photographer, author, poet, singer and songwriter. He was a good person who enjoyed mentoring younger people and took to finishing his texts and correspondence with LLAP (live long and prosper).
He is missed.
