The old 'Why do people have to spend so much time complaining about Democrats doing things that Republicans do all the time?'

The answer: We expect more of Democrats. And we expect more of Rolling Stone.

We expect Republicans and Fox 'News' to be constantly lying or spreading misinformation. We expect better of the people we actually think are better.

And when the facts are incorrect we will call it out every time.

Pretty simple in mho.

I never get that whole "well they did it too, and they did it worse" thing.

Reminds me of elementary school. "John you're going to the principal for hitting Jack." "Waaahh, Robert hits people all the time and never gets in trouble..whhiiiinnne".

Doesn't' change the fact that John hit Jack.

Fox News won't change.

Also because the subject is one that draws a lot of attention. Both because there are far too many sexual assaults, particularly on college campuses, but also because this sort of mistake can add to the claim that false rape claims are frequent, in spite of false rape claims are rare for obvious reasons.

When a CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC, Washington Post, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Mayberry Gazzette, etc investigation reveals problems with a Rolling Stone report, their audience pays attention.

When a CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC, Washington Post, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Mayberry Gazzette, etc investigation reveals problems with a Fox News Channel report, their audience ignores it. The only way they will ever believe that FNC "made a mistake" is if FNC says it. Any other source will be dismissed.

There is no news, but Rightist news, and Fox is its prophet.

... I can see getting into this situation. If someone came to me who said they had been subjected to a gang rape but seemed traumatized and didn't want their name to get out or have me talk to folks who would know it was her who reported, I could have seen myself getting into that same trouble.

I wouldn't now, knowing what happened to RS, but before that, I could see myself running with that story. I sure as hell wouldn't break the anonymity of the person even now. The only difference is I would probably tell the person that I will prepare everything for the time when he/she was ready for me to verify the story and would not do anything with it until then.
