Rolling Stone failed in ‘basic journalistic practice’, review finds

Rolling Stone apologises and removes UVA 'rape' story after Columbia review

* Magazine failed in ‘basic journalistic practice’, review finds

* Reporter did not speak to friends quoted in 9,000-word article

* Managing editor apologises to ‘readers and all those damaged by our story’

The 13,000-word report, which was released by Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, evaluated the editorial process that led to the story’s publication, concluding that the magazine had failed to follow “basic, even routine journalistic practice”.
...

The Columbia report chronicled several errors, missteps and failures by the reporter, her editors and the Rolling Stone newsroom, which could have been avoided had they followed certain “reporting pathways”, it said.

“The problem was methodology, compounded by an environment where several journalists with decades of collective experience failed to surface and debate problems about their reporting or to heed the questions they did receive from a fact-checking colleague,” the report found.

Countless media will blast their false outrage and call for RS's head on a platter with no shame. One outraged news outlet posted theirs right above a story sourced from The Daily Mail claiming a town will fine you 500 Euros for saying hello to George Clooney.

bastards over at FOX, let alone anywhere else in the RW parallel press world.

That said, false rape accusations are very destructive.

It is also not an established fact that the UVA story is a false accusation.

Rolling Stone makes a significant misstep in one single article. CNN and the rest of the mainstream media starts thumping their chests with headlines about it - hypocritically.

It's a little much when you consider what Rolling Stone did in one article: Rolling Stone has withdrawn the article, admitted was erroneous and apologized. FOX News does this crap every day as a way of life, doesn't withdraw or correct the record, rarely admits it was wrong and rarely apologizes. What it does is just line up doing more of the same every day.

Rolling Stone got one way wrong. Shame on them. But if the mainstream media was truly concerned about the accuracy of information it's public is receiving, there should be a major reckoning by them to address what FOX News is doing to dumb down America for the political gain of the political party it spreads propaganda for.

and I can only imagine that parting with an enormous sum of cash must be a chastening experience. Being falsely accused of rape is about as close to a defamation slam dunk as you can get.

It is one of the best out there. This is an isolated incident for the magazine. Fox can't make the same claim.
