Chuck Todd asked Governor Jindal if a caterer or baker could refuse to cater or bake a cake for a same sex wedding celebration and Jindal said if the caterer or baker's religion prohibited him or her from participating in a same sex wedding he or she could.
The follow up question should have been can the caterer or baker refuse to participate in a wedding celebration for two liars. fornicators, divorcees, blashphemers, and idolaters because the Bible proscribes those activities also.
I had a good friend who was a United Church Of Christ minister. She put this on the marque at her church:

(99,711 posts)The Bible proscribes a host of behaviors , depending on one's interpretation. Jindal suggested a person can rely on the Bible and his or her First Amendment right to freedom of religion to oppose just one.
That's the flaw in his balancing act between religious freedom and the right to be free from discrimination.
We already have a documented instance of a Georgia florist who said she would make an arrangement for a adulterer but not a gay because she believes being gay is worse.
The overarching point is that some folks are using a cafeteria approach to the Bible to support their bigotry, just as they did in their opposition to civil rights.

(20,317 posts)And yeah, it is telling that they're so interested in one sort of bible-proscribed behavior, but not others. You would think they would refuse to serve anyone who is not having their first wedding, unless they are a widow/widower. But there you go.
As I understand it, the standard here is that your 'religious freedom' stops at the point of running afoul of discrimination laws; ie, discriminating on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. There's nothing preventing a business owner from refusing to serve people they consider assholes (for whatever reason), or insufficiently shirted-and-shod, for instance.

(99,711 posts)As you know sexual identity is not a protected class at the federal level and in many states, including Jindal's state of Louisiana, it is not a protected class so the glbtq community in Louisiana has no effective protection from discrimination.
Jindal is suggesting that there needs to be a balance between folks following their religious principles and other folks, in this instance, glbtq folks being free from discrimination.
To be consistent there should be a variation of the conscientious objector law that it is not enough to oppose the war you are being conscripted into but to oppose all war. I had a high school teacher I really liked who was C O during the Viet Nam War....He was asked if he would have fought against the NAZIS and he said no, his opposition was to participate in war for any purpose. I could never go that far and thus would have been deemed ineligible for conscientious objector status.
It seems some folks are using their religion as a cloak for bigotry as the list of Biblically proscribed behavior , according to the interpretation of some is really, really...long, and they are choosing to hold out one behavior for censure while ignoring a lot of others.

I think people are too accustomed to being led around by the nose rather than finding out real truth on their own.
