Monsanto Is in Hot Water - Again

By Mike Ludwig, Truthout | Report
It's been a tough few weeks for Monsanto.
Late last week, companies "such as Monsanto" were implicated in a watchdog group's petition to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) on behalf of anonymous scientists within the agency who say their research is suppressed when it upsets powerful agrichemical interests.
The allegations enraged the industry's critics, who have been busy touting recent reports linking popular herbicides often used in tandem with genetically engineered crops, or GMOs, to cancer and antibiotic resistance.
Both controversies are renewing calls for tougher restrictions on certain herbicides and mandatory packaging labels for groceries containing GMO ingredients.
"If true, this is a major scandal at the USDA," wrote Gary Ruskin, director of the pro- labeling group US Right to Know, in a March 30 letter to the US House and Senate agricultural committees demanding an investigation. "It is not the proper role of the USDA to engage in a cover up for Monsanto and other agrichemical companies." ..............(more)

(62,325 posts)Monsanto apologists have been trying to deny this for years.
It's a bit late for many who have been exposed to Monsanto's poison but better late than never.

(3,813 posts)I think it was Chomsky who noted thedifference between kooky conspiracy theories and plausible systems analyses. The latter deserve further investigation when economic interests, access to levers of power in government, and inconvenient facts are all at play. Given Monsanto's vast wealth, regulatory capture of the USDA, and ominous information about their latest products, I think that this systems analysis needs further exploration and abundant sunlight shining on these questions.

(62,325 posts)Sunlight is streaming in on Mosanto over the past decade or so. And appears to be speeding up thankfully, as more and more countries learn the harmful nature of their toxic products to their populations.
They used their vast wealth to influence governments for years, but that appears to be changing.
Some countries apparently do care more about their citizens than about the profit margins of Big Corporations.
So far, ours doesn't appear to be among them.

(9,126 posts)For crops that were approved through the backdoor, I'm always shocked that the woo warriors use "they've been extensively tested" as a defense. Because I'm a luddite and only make decisions about what I should eat out of irrational fear and can't be trusted!
What say ye shills?

We already knew that research is being suppressed. The agreements with the universities to allow the use of seeds only apply to seeds that have already been FDA approved for sale -- not the seeds in their experimental stages. But this report shows it goes even further, to the USDA itself.
And I noticed this disclaimer:
"Small amounts of glyphosate and other herbicides can be found on foods, but most herbicide-resistant GMO crops are processed into biofuel, animal feed and junk food, and farm workers are considered most at risk of overexposure to the chemicals."
For one thing, glyphosphate doesn't just go on foods, where it can get washed off -- it is absorbed INTO foods. And junk food or processed food is a large part of the American diet (and so are the meats from animals who ate glyphosphate-containing feed).

(22,671 posts)Oh yeah, there is. We can plant native plants to help the pollinators, Earth's ecosystem workhorses, to survive. Give them an alternative to what agri-corps and agir-chemical companies present them with.
Time to plant milkweed seeds for the 2015 monarch migration. Don't wait.
Sprouts are coming up.
We planted 100 Showy Milkweed seeds and so many other native flower varieties, I wouldn't be able to give a count. About 1/3 of them have started their journey upward. Also planted some non-native Red Trumpet vines, California Poppies and fuchsia, to get this party started.
