and dropped the first two panels.

Doonesbury has been at the top of the front page of the comics for years, and until this week consistently ran with the opening two panels (some newspapers cut them for lack of space, hence Trudeau's use of them as ancillary to the main punchline).

Not going to read too much into it, but it is an odd occurrence, especially as it was replaced by Blondie. I'll be curious to see if it's ever explained, or if the comic is reinstated to it normal prominence.

because papers often DO drop them.
So he saves the good stuff for the rest of the panels.
