(7,021 posts)have no idea what this story is about. How can anyone who has seen what kind of bullshit the republicans / tea parters have put forth lately from the letter to Iran to the banker benefit bill killing what little aid people in Kansas get by making them restrict the amount they can withdraw per transaction so more fees get paid to the banksters to . fuck it I can't go on . This country is on a fast pace to shitsville and no one pays attention. This is why we don't need a wall st. / bankster running for pres.

(930 posts)Some are paying attention, but clearly it's the minority. Even if it were the majority, there is evidently little we can do in our democracy with which to change the course (hmm, how democratic is that?).

(14,449 posts)I thought we would take almost every seat. Nothing shocks me anymore.
Next time govt shuts down by pugs, they really need to shut it all down and show voters what it's like without govt. it would be painful but I can't see any other way to get through to voters.

(20,219 posts)I just checked a bit ago....apparently, part of the reasoning was that now, there are so many channels to choose from, anyone can broadcast their point of view. Previously, the FD attempted to level the field since there were only a very few channels.
That was the thinking explained in the Wikipedia article I glanced at.
That's why, instead of just resuscitating the FD, I'd rather see new regulations pertaining to LYING and the use of labels that play on long-held public trust of institutions such as News Network.

(39,909 posts)That honor belongs to the Telecommunications Act of 1996 that allowed a handful of corporations to own "The News".

(41,171 posts)the 1996 Act a sole company could NOT own all the news in a town or local market--the local newspaper, radio and TV stations, and thus spread only one POV.
So as I understand it, the 1996 Telecom Act lifted regulations, or the Media was 'deregulated' (like the banks!) which then allowed Media outlets to consolidate (like the TBTF big banks) to the point today where a few giant monopolies exist and they control 90% of all US cable news and programming, newspapers, magazines, radio and TV stations.
(Sinclair alone now owns about 1,200 radio stations in this country).
Re the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE of the 1940s, I've heard that it was to insure balance in radio news programming, based on the principle of the commons, the shared airwaves. Don't know if it applied to newsprint also. The doctrine was pre-TV.
What we have today is these top 5 media conglomerate owners who control almost ALL the content (aka The Wal-Marts of Media);
Comcast (NBC), Disney (ABC), Viacom (CBS?), Time Warner (CNN, HBO) and News Corp (FOX).
This brings up the serious issue of non-enforcement of the *SHERMAN ANTI-TRUST ACT by Reagan also. IMO if the Left doesn't start making inroads into this Media domination by the corporate right wing somehow, especially the liar extremists, we can write on the internet all day long, preach to friends and families as much as we can, but until there is a major change to this structure I fear that in these efforts we might be:
~Singing on the mountain, but you won't be there to hear them~
as my father used to say.

(41,171 posts)It's the strategy, just like in nature, sports, conflict, war & some business- keep attacking your target (prey), wear it down until it collapses. Through the years I've studied a bit of military history and it's very similar to plans and targets against an enemy, and much of it is common sense as well. It's painful, like loss always is. Although just and superior but lacking resources, I don't think the Left has the necessary kill instinct to combat what's happening, esp. w/o public awareness which is critical, as the Right knows thus their control and ownership of the Media.

(2,741 posts)I have come to believe that in the present world, people claiming allegiance to the GodOffalParty do not care about anyone or anything outside their personal bubble world. I can't imagine any of the three evil pieces of human waste named above, caring about hungry homeless people outside their mansions.

(9,426 posts)Of course they do, they welcome idiots. After Dubya was placed into the WH twice, they know they do not have to be smart to get there, just easy to manipulate. Staggering to think $carah Payme did not get their backing, she would be perfect for them. Brain dead rabble rouser.

I still miss the cop that stopped him - he passed about 2 years ago, Duke did - best cop ever.

(92,403 posts)There are a lot of issues we should never forget. The problem is Democrats have been hesitant to bring issues up they view as too controversial. During the bush/Gore election, a women's right to choose and SC court justices were barely touched, and I assume it was because of the Democratic advisors telling them to stay away from what they considered "polarizing" issues.

(38,437 posts)Pence is a pretender compared to that piece-of-shit Rove.
Nevertheless, Pence is the new generation and needs to be hammered endlessly for this along with those who support him.
