A dragon teaches children you don't have to be afraid of somebody that is "different"

ALEX MYHRE
Raydell Cordell is the front half of the dragon and Jamie Fields is the back half in the Rose's production of "The Reluctant Dragon."

Review below.

After dinner out with them, Marta and I went with one of our daughters, SIL, and granddaughter to see "The Reluctant Dragon" on the "Rose Theater Children's Stage" (http://www.rosetheater.org/) last night. Marta and I knew the story from Disney's "The Reluctant Dragon": http://movies.disney.com/the-reluctant-dragon

An over sized chess set in the lobby for children to get a hands on experience that relates to the dragon later in the show was only the beginning.

So subtle. Not preachy. A multicultural family to boot.

A dragon the the town fears. It takes a small boy named Glaston to teach dragon killer St. George to put away his sword and open his eyes. The last dragon in the world is refined and lovable. St. George then in turn teaches the townspeople to accept somebody different from themselves for what they are.

I wish every town in the world had a reluctant dragon to teach some adults a few things too.

He’s a lover, not a fighter.

That’s what Glaston (Alia Sedlacek), a boy in the medieval village of Guildemere, discovers about a fearsome looking creature in “The Reluctant Dragon.” The play, geared for children 5 and up, opened Friday at the Rose.

Glaston’s discovery is quite a surprise. He’s read a great deal about dragons, which leads him to investigate when his father (Matthew Pyle) spies one in a cave near Guildemere.

This dragon likes to recite poetry, paint pictures, write sonnets, play chess and look up at the stars. And since he’s the last dragon, and rather lonely, he’d love to be invited to a tea party.

FULL review at link. Next up at the Rose is Charlotte’s Web: http://www.rosetheater.org/season-tickets/2014-15-season-2/charlottes-web/

Woke up at 2. Couldn't get back to sleep. Guess I'll sleep during the TV ballgame this afternoon.

but it makes perfect sense.

To be honest, I hadn't even heard of the film until it aired recently on TCM. And then I saw it, and loved it so much I watched it twice. Great fun. I hope the play catches on with childrens' theater everywhere.

Movie or a fairy tale? Pick your preference this weekend

POSTED: SATURDAY, APRIL 4, 2015 1:00 AM
By Andrea Kszystyniak / World-Herald staff writer

This weekend, you can see a play, head out on an egg hunt or take the kids to an old movie. We recommend these events in the Omaha area:

Fairy tale: See a fun fairy tale on stage at The Rose this weekend. “The Reluctant Dragon” tells the story of Glaston, a boy who ends up befriending a dragon. The play will be presented today at 2 and 5 p.m. Tickets are $18.

Movie madness: Revisit the 1988 film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” with the kids this weekend at Film Streams. The theater continues its Forever Young series, showing movies appropriate for children. This movie features human actors interacting with cartoons, including the infamous Roger Rabbit. The film will be shown today and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

He made the the dragon killer open his eyes and see that somebody different need not be feared. Then St. George teaches others to open their heats and minds. This I must see.

A dragon the the town fears. It takes a small boy named Glaston to teach dragon killer St. George to put away his sword and open his eyes. The last dragon in the world is refined and lovable. St. George then in turn teaches the townspeople to accept somebody different from themselves for what they are.

Great post Steve, thank you.

I didn't even think to mention this earlier. This young lady filled the role that said it was tailor made for her.

Sorry I didn't think to mention this early this morning.
