Lost in Space HD Restoration Test

Marta and I were in the opening night TV audience in 1965 and have been fans ever since. Cast member Marta Kristen was probably the first time I heard the name Marta. Both Danish and Spanish names.

We met Bill Mumy (Danger Will Robinson) in 2004. We talked about many of his different rolls including his Disney films. He loved it.

And yes we went to the theater for the 1998 version too.

I was a fan of the show as a kid, but I don't know if it's aged well. The last season was pretty bad, as I recall.

I really liked how the movie brought back some of the concepts of the show that were truly great, like the design of the Jupiter 2 and the robot voiced by Dick Tufeld. That voice is just iconic.

I don't know why they never "rebooted" this as a series. Seems like it would be great entertainment that the whole family can enjoy.

I had been hearing on and off over the years, about efforts to revive the series, and the efforts seemed to flounder - I think in some cases because other scifi series were being revived at the same time and it seemed to be a "me too" thing. But if they do such, they need to try to gear for "family" and quit with the fixation on the "18 - 25 male" demographic, where entire shows and their characters must be "dark and gritty". Lost in Space basically had one "bad guy" (Dr. Smith), who, thanks to Jonathan Harris' performance, could add a layer of drama - including "anxiety" and "dread", throughout the entire plot line, without every other character being required to have some sort of psycho background.

I watched the first two years as a kid…it started getting formula-d the way Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea did, but I always had a fondness of Sci-Fi even the way this show evolved.

Snip: I felt that Billy Mumy would try to bolt when it got a bit less busy, so we went to him next. Our family had always loved "For the Love of Willadean," a 1964 Disney TV movie, that Billy had been in, so I had a shot of Billy, Michael McGreevey, Roger Mobley and Terry Burnham from that film. Billy remembered it well and said they had a lot of fun filming it. I had a shot from "In Praise of Pip," and from "It's a Good Life" for him to sign, and Steve wanted one of Billy's own photos from "Lost in Space."

Snip: We went to Bob May, who was the man inside the "Lost in Space" robot; he was sitting next to Billy Mumy. He was funnier than anything, and we bought several photos from him. He told us the 2nd season of "Lost in Space" would be out in September, which was good news. Watching this series still ensures a good time.

Snip: Judy was sitting by Ben Cooper's table, and as we walked by Ben said to Steve, "He's here!" I wasn't paying much attention, but Ben pointed to a man standing next to Ben's table, and the man's companion said something about "Sammy, the Way-out Seal." Steve seemed to know what he was talking about, after a moment, and he ran out to the car and got the "Chartroose Caboose" lobby cards again and ran back in. Apparently, Michael McGreevey, who was in "For the Love of Willadean,"
"Chartroose Caboose," and also "Sammy, the Way-out Seal," had stopped by to talk to Billy Mumy and Susan Gordon, two child actors he had worked with. Billy Mumy had told him about the people who had a shot from "For the Love of Willadean." (Michael went, yeah, sure, when he heard that When Michael went over to say hi to Ben, Ben mentioned we were there with the lobby cards. So we got Michael's signature on the shot and the lobby cards, and it was a real bonus. I never thought in a million years we'd run across him, since he wasn't acting anymore. The only thing that would have made it better would have been Roger Mobley walking in the door at that moment.

Then, Michael mentioned to Susan Gordon that he'd worked on "Fame" for four years, and we did a double-take. Steve said, "Did you say "Fame?" Michael nodded, and I told him we were staying with someone who worked on "Fame," named Frank Merwald. Michael looked surprised and said yes, he knew Frank very well and he was a great guy. Steve had asked Ben Cooper if he had a copy of "Chartroose Caboose," but he didn't. When Steve asked Michael if he had a copy of the film, he said that yes, he had a copy but it was a black and white print from a local station. He looked a bit funny, and said "Do you know who got me that print?" We shook our heads and he said, "Frank Merwald." It was a very funny moment, and I felt like we were definitely in the twilight zone at that moment. Frank hadn't seen the lobby cards the night before, because all we showed him were the screenshots. It was as if the cosmos had aligned perfectly for a few moments, because if we hadn't gone to Ben Cooper and Billy Mumy first, Michael would have come in and gone before those two stars saw the pictures we had for them to sign. Unfortunately, Frank does not have a copy of that movie now. Michael's friend took a picture of us with him, which is below.

Of the sixties television camp-y wars this was one of the best. I've read that there was a lot of conflict of the set as to who was actually going to be the male lead.

just based on how they resembled each other, that Anne Lockhart (who starred in the original BSG) was June Lockhart's daughter!

Snip: Lloyd Bochner, in particular, was a sweet and warm man. We had a shot from Combat! for him to sign, and he loved it; he talked a bit about Rick Jason. I mentioned that I'd meant to bring a shot from "The Night Walker," and he smiled and said he hadn't watched the film in years. He said that he didn't know if he was staying at the con the entire day on Saturday because his wife was in the hospital, and when I told him I was sorry about that and that I hoped she would feel better soon, he thanked me so sincerely and had tears in his eyes. I had never thought of him like that, because he always played such sneaky and haughty characters. I will always remember him in that way, and think so much more highly of him now.

And http://www.steveandmarta.com/tzcon2004.htm

Snip: Lloyd Bochner was free, and I had a "Thriller" episode shot for him, "The Prisoner in the Mirror," which he'd never seen. He mentioned that quality TV doesn't exist anymore, and that they used to make shows that were good to watch. Steve had a shot from "Battlestar Galactica" of Lloyd standing next to John Colicos and the Nomen characters, which Lloyd loved. He said that Lorne Green was a very special person in his life, and got a little misty-eyed. I then had to bring out "The Night Walker" shot I meant to bring two years ago, and he smiled at it. He mentioned that Robert Taylor was an extremely nice man.

And I agree about his "quality TV" remark. It was true family fare. I met Herb Jefferson Jr. at a Con here in the Philly area about 12 years ago. We were chatting it up and talked about how Richard Hatch was trying to revive the series (this was before Ron Moore got hold of it) and I pulled out my paperback novelization of the BSG pilot that he gladly signed.

When a lot of those '60s series came out, I was able to catch them "live" (those still airing new episodes) by ~1967 (when I was 5) and later, as I could easily turn the dial on the RCA color TV we had (on legs...lol) and knew what was on what channel. Batman, Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (for some reason, I loved David Hedison), The Time Tunnel, Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Avengers, Get Smart, Julia, and the claymation Gumby, plus cartoons like Underdog and syndicated repeats like Alvin and the Chipmunks.

I think since a bunch of these shows were shot in or were switching to color, they used the "color" (notably the wardrobe) to the max - and that definitely caught this kid's attention. In fact, I recall reading that NBC purposely picked the primary colors for the uniforms in Star Trek to underscore that the show was "In Color" - like their peacock (and you see similar with the wild outfits seen in Batman, which ran on ABC - channel 6 @ 7 pm here locally).

It was funny that one of my young nieces had discovered The Addams Family (from the film remakes) and had to tell her about the original series.

Snip: I also took a screenshot of Jonathan Harris from the Night Gallery episode "Since Aunt Ada Came to Stay," making sure I had James Farentino in the shot wearing a green carnation. Harris remembered the episode and what it was about, and he remembered Farentino. In fact, he remembered everything I asked him; I was surprised, because he's been in so many things, but he's on the ball. Steve bought a shot of him and the robot from "Lost in Space," and mentioned that he'd loved the show so much when it was on he'd called the local station to see how he could act on it; he'd been about 9 at the time. Harris said, with a droll look, "You would have had to be a friend of Irwin Allen to get on that show."
