"religious freedom" law: NASCAR
Perhaps Indiana Gove. Mike Pence and state lawmakers should revisit the religious freedom legislation. Theyve officially lost NASCAR , a sport that, despite its growing diversity, still has a strong conservative base.
NASCAR is disappointed by the recent legislation passed in Indiana, said NASCAR Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer Brett Jewkes, in a statement released Tuesday.
We will not embrace nor participate in exclusion or intolerance. We are committed to diversity and inclusion within our sport and therefore will continue to welcome all competitors and fans at our events in the state of Indiana and anywhere else we race.

Having said that I admit I am surprised they did this, you can be sure Jeff had something to do with it.

(32,082 posts)How many AA NASCAR drivers have there been? Answer only one serious driver. Wendell Scott and he last drove in 1973. There were a couple others but they were marginal. How many openly gay drivers? Sorry NASCAR you have no room to talk about equality or diversity.

(32,082 posts)That same exact statement could have been said and was said about every sport at one time.

(34,825 posts)is it your belief that they are actively working to ensure that there are no black drivers? or could it be that racing is incredibly expensive, and is typically a sport run by multiple generations of families? what would you propose that would get more people of color involved in motorsport?
former9thward
(32,082 posts)I am sure there has been no discrimination whatsoever. Oh and I know your next statement will be "Show me specifically where and who they discriminated against." Odd that standard is not used in other areas of our society but NASCAR gets a pass. And then it will be "tracks are in the rural areas not in the inner city", which is of course the same thing they said about golf courses as the reason blacks could not play in that sport.
frylock
(34,825 posts)the same attitude many had about hockey. I couldn't help but notice the lack of proposals in your reply that may get minorities interested and involved in motorsport.

(20,709 posts)very talented driver. I was just reading a piece from 2007 that claims the greatest barrier to getting more black drivers in the field is the reluctance of team sponsors.

(32,082 posts)And is what this thread was about. I suspect you know that....
Chan790
(20,176 posts)That said, it's becoming less so at the lower levels of the sport.
This is Darrell "Bubba" Wallace Jr.
Having dominated the Camping World Truck series last year in his 2nd full season of competition, he is now racing in the XFinity series (that would basically be the high minor-leagues of NASCAR) and putting on a strong showing, currently 5th in the standings...he is likely to make the jump to Sprint Cup next season and is the early odds-on favorite for RoY.

(30,481 posts)They have invested large amounts of money to make that happen. These racecar drivers are working their way up from the bottom and creating the NASCAR of tomorrow. These drivers aren't at the top yet. They will get there. NASCAR has done a great job over the last decade of being an inclusive organization. From the pit crew to front office positions to on the track. This is a great statement by them under any conditions.
"Sorry NASCAR you have no room to talk about equality or diversity."
It is a daily conversation in NASCAR. You clearly aren't aware of that. You should at least be honest about those who are truly trying to embrace diversity. They put their money where their mouth is and have done so for over a decade in this area. And yes, there will always be a conservative bent to the sport from the fan side.

(32,082 posts)this thread would be full of posts denouncing NASCAR (and their fans) for being almost all white. It would be full of red-neck slurs. I like to look at institutions as they are, not on what law they support or oppose based on what they think PR requires at that particular moment.

(6,036 posts)Darrell has caught quite a bit of attention on the NASCAR circuit. Wouldn't be surprised to see him take Biffle's spot when he retires. Probably move up to Cup in 2017 or 2018.
NASCAR knows where the advertising dollars come from. It's why they have been supporting increasing diversity. It why you see talent like Danial Suarez from the Mexico series, and previously people like Miguel Paludo, and a driver or two from Europe running for KBM (Kyle Bush Motorsports) a couple years ago.

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
Sorry, but I think it is rude to call an organization based on a stereotype such as 'Reneck' when there are supporters here at DU who enjoy NASCAR racing. Legendary racer Jeff Gordon is an Obama supporter and Nascar came out quickly to oppose Pence's law. I think it is rude to assume that all NASCAR fans are *REDNECKS* and it is insensitive to start a thread with a headline as such.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Tue Mar 31, 2015, 03:58 PM, and the Jury voted 0-7 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This is not an easy call but red neck is a pejorative and it's not okay to use it just because it's being used on folks we don't like. But I will still vote to let it be.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Stupid alert.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Left alone, but not PC to use the term red neck anymore
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It is a sport beloved by rednecks though - I don't think the OP was saying only Rednecks love NASCAR or liking NASCAR makes you a redneck, I think he was saying Rednecks love NASCAR. Which is demonstrably true. El Bryanto
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Nah - doesn't need to be blocked.
