Lifting the longstanding ban on U.S. crude oil exports would boost the country's economy and enhance its global leadership, a former senior Obama administration official will tell senators on Thursday, introducing a strategic dimension to the growing debate over selling American oil abroad.

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hear Thursday from various companies and experts on crude oil export policy and the 40-year-old ban on exports. The witnesses represent consulting firm IHS, ConocoPhillips Co., the Center for a New American Security, American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers and refiner Monroe Energy.
Exporting oil -- rather counter to the energy independence for which we're supposed to be aiming -- is the goal of Keystone and other pipelines. Repubs made that obvious by inserting export language into KXL bill. Now that the bill's dead, other tactics to export our energy -- and benefit BigOil's pocketbooks -- are under way.
