(18,219 posts)That was an incredible photo. But so were all three of the top photos. And I was so impressed by all the entries this time...it was a great batch. Everyone deserves a pat on the back. We have excellent photographers here.

The birdie gets me every time I see it. That half squinted eye lid gives away his exasperation and makes me want to start to shiver.

(5,902 posts)Any state (or country) would be doing itself a favor by using these photos in official tourism promotion posters and brochures.
My only suggestion would be that, once the winners are announced (to preclude bias during the vote), a caption with the locations of each of these be included. Having an idea of where in the world photos this stunning were taken really adds to their enjoyment, for me at least.
Kudos to the artists! It's a talent I wish I had.

Who says photography's for the birds! It was a real treat.

(8,554 posts)I'm in the foothills of the North Cascades, wa state. Tho, I doubt mine could be useful for tourism purposes...those gray skies do seem ominous to most people, even with the sunset. Maybe an xmas card, ha!
Here's another shot that I managed to get during that brief moment the sun was out; it shows more clearly just how dark it actually had been that whole snowy day.
(there's a snow-capped volcano just behind that hill)
Thank you for the kind words, forest444! My picture was only a lucky fluke, I'm sure no artist.

(5,902 posts)You're talented and modest, Jake. Genius, as they say, may be 90% perspiration - but it's nothing without the inspiration.
And yes, it would be a remarkable Christmas card. Can you believe I lived in L.A. for six years, but never made it to Washington!?
Thanks again for the background - and again, three cheers!

(8,554 posts)my one hit wonder. I really never dreamed that so many others would like that picture!
Congratulations to all of the real photographers and outstanding images that represented Winter for this contest.
One lucky shot can never beat the well-trained eye...I just happened to be in the right place at the right time with my cheapo little camera, so I can imagine what those with experience might have done with that fire-in-the-trees moment.
Thanks again for this chance to participate!
