My Mom and I went to a local Dairy Queen, a guy with his son came in, the son was severely autistic.
He didn't bother us, but he did push into my Mom just a little.
It didn't hurt my Mom at all.
Mom didn't mind.
He made non-speech sounds, and was loud.
After the 2 left, the Mom and I just felt sorry for the guy, I could see he was rather overworked, probably from not just a job but caring for the autistic boy as well.
For those here caring for autistic children, I see just what you go through daily.

(149,729 posts)I suspect most folks wouldn't have thought anything about it, or would have been annoyed.
That's not your style.
Thank you for the story and the lesson.

(46,358 posts)I'm very grateful none of us had or have autism.
(And all of us were vaccinated too!)
But it must be so hard to deal with on a daily basis.

(98 posts)Dr. Cannell of the Vitamin D Council, a nonprofit, has been treating Autistic children for years for free. His interest in Autism has been high for many years and he recently discovered he is on the spectrum himself.
His treatment includes maintaining Blood Serum levels in "Lifeguard" range, which is around 100 ng/ml - so named for obvious reasons.
(The body's tolerance ceiling is just over 200 ng/ml.)
He determined two things caring for these children:
a) They began talking in full sentences.
b) They began socializing.
This made a lot of sense to him, as one of the features of Autism has been that the children, overall, do much better in the summer than they do in fall, winter and spring.
He was also surprised to learn that older children responded similarly - which he did not expect.
I don't know if he's still taking patients - but a call or letter to the VD Council would be the way to find out.
They have both a website and a great fb page.

(6,719 posts)Sometimes we share our lives, other times our pets, and sometimes our experiences. Sometimes we share our sadness and sometimes our joy. Sometimes we laugh and sometimes we rant. I accept this as a rant for what ever reason. And it definitely does belong on DU. We are here together. I was glad to learn of this sensitive encounter.
