Maybe that wasnt exactly the best way to do that, he said on Fox News on Tuesday.
He was referring to the disgraceful and irresponsible letter that he and 46 Senate colleagues sent to Irans leaders this week that generated outrage from Democrats and even some conservatives.
The letter was an attempt to scare the Iranians from making a deal that would limit their nuclear program for at least a decade by issuing a warning that the next president could simply reverse any agreement. It was a blatant, dangerous effort to undercut the president on a grave national security issue by communicating directly with a foreign government.
Maybe Mr. McCain, who is chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, should have thought about the consequences before he signed the letter, which was drafted by Tom Cotton, a Republican of Arkansas, a junior senator with no foreign policy credentials. Instead of trying to be leaders and statesmen, the Republicans in Congress seem to think their role is outside the American government, divorced from constitutional principles, tradition and the security interests of the American people.

(24,692 posts)Republicans are perfectly willing to diminish Americas standing as a global power capable of crafting international commitments and adhering to them.
But perhaps President Obama described this bizarre reality best. Its somewhat ironic to see some members of Congress wanting to make common cause with the hard-liners in Iran, he said. Its an unusual coalition.
So far, the Iranians have largely dismissed the bumbling threat, with their foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, describing the letter as propaganda. But there are fears it could embolden hard-liners in Iran who, like the Republicans and some of the Democrats in Congress, oppose any nuclear agreement between Iran, the United States and its major allies.
The best and only practical way to restrain Iran from developing a bomb is through negotiating a strict agreement with tough monitoring. In rejecting diplomacy, the Republicans make an Iranian bomb and military conflict more likely.

(2,574 posts)Until the NYT connects these dots, i.e. does it's job of reporting the facts of the history of Repubs sedition of exactly this kind, it is
still giving a wink wink to the Repubs....propaganda by omission. This shouldn't be a "public scolding" by the NYT. Their obligation is to tell the whole history and truth of Republicans deadly interferences in destroying sensitive presidential negotiations for their own political gain.
Nixon and Regan both escaped punishment because both parties & the MSM kept their political poison quiet i.e. essentially let these crimes against Americans evolve into RW legend (as the ultimate "dirty tricks" . Even Tehran Tom/the Tehran 47's threat in the letter re: dealing with the "next" ...supposedly Repub administration ...is precisely out of the Nixon/Regan playbook
This letter and act of Repub direct defiance, of usurping and threatening our national negotiations and interest did not occur in a political or historical vacuum nor share any similarities with Jane Fonda or Nancy Pelosi (the Msm sanctioned false equivalencies from the RW) These 47 senators defined themselves as Republicans and the next leaders of the USA just as NIxon and Regan did.
I guess the only slightly surprising thing is that the 47 wrote this letter publicly, whereas Nixon/Kissinger and Regan did their mutinous
"diplomacy" in secret. That actually says something about how openly unabashed the Repubs have become in the last 50 years with their own repugnant, antidemocracy politics
The well recocognized expert on Nixon/ Regan/ recent Repub history of sedition is Robert Parry. Why is he not invited on any MSM show giving essential historical perspective for the Tehran ,and why no consultation of Parry by the NYT or any newspaper?
I hope, at least, Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow. Bill Maher( tho hardly the MSM) book Robert Parry...set an accurate historical framework for the Tehran 47.

(2,382 posts)... malicious mental defectives elect a pack of rabid hyenas to high office. Nothing good.
The leaders in Iran recognize the letter as a sign of the disruptive republican obstructionism, why is the media in this country ignoring it? From day one of the first inauguration, the gop has done NOTHING for the citizens of this country, they have blocked everything President Obama has tried to do. Sometimes he has been able to roll over them, but they keep on going. Where are the jobs they promised, unless they were all military jobs? This wet-behind the ears Cotton shows up, and he is their pin up boy, leading the pack. McCain put his decision making skills on full display when he ran with Palin as his VP. He should have retired (in disgrace) after that debacle. He will NEVER recognize that the BETTER man won the election, and we should all be thankful for that.

(2,548 posts)The Republican Party has become a clear and present danger to America, democracy and rational thinking. Good thing the Iranian leadership is smarter than these republican Morons otherwise we might all be painted with the brush of world wide derision and scorn. If these republicans are allowed to get away with this what will be their next act, and who will pay the price for it? Teheran Tom Cotton is totally unrepentant for his leadership role in this treasonous fiasco. Benedict Arnold only sold out West Point, Teheran Tom and 46 other alleged American senators sold out America and its Commander in Chief. The day after Teheran Tom sent the open letter to Iran he met with numerous big name defense contractors in off the record meetings. Why? What was he promising to these war profiteers. It appears that if the republican party gets anymore control of the U.S. Government they fully intend to sent the world on fire, possibly nuclear fire. The new Republican Party, a clear and present danger to America and the world.

Will this cost some of these idiots the next election?
Will the main stream media continue to follow this story that shows what true "idiots" these people are?

(81,383 posts)Ran off and did something utterly ill-considered and thoroughly jerky before even bothering his little brain about consequences of such actions. Yeah, we sure did need a Commander-in-Chief like THAT, didn't we, STILL-SENATOR mccain? Sure glad the voters weren't fooled.
Sadly, this is proof-positive that just having been in the military in one's past does NOT entitle one to a free ride to a bigger job in politics. It certainly helps. But it's not everything. And it does NOT guarantee that individuals with that past experience have learned anything from it. TRAITOR tom, too. You'd think, having been suited up in the Middle East, he wouldn't have an appetite to provoke much more of that.

(38,438 posts)WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) today issued the following statement on the role of Congress amid American-led negotiations to constrain Irans nuclear program:
In exchange for allowing Iran to maintain the capabilities to build nuclear weapons, the Administration promises to comprehensively lift as many as 14 Iran sanctions laws, many of which passed with bipartisan veto-proof majorities. There is no Constitutional authority granting a president unilateral power to repeal American law. Sanctions should not be weakened until Iran stops its nuclear weapons program, stops supporting and exporting terrorism, stops aggression against its neighbors, stops egregious human rights abuses, and stops threatening to annihilate Israel. A better deal, with bipartisan congressional backing, is the best insurance policy against a nuclear Iran, a destructive arms race, and war in the Middle East.

(21,600 posts)long story short, a disaster in the Klingon Empire means they can no longer afford hostilities with the Federation or they will eventually die. The Federation extends an olive branch and agrees to meet with their Chancellor to discuss peace. "Hard line" Klingons do not trust the Federation and oppose the Chancellor's move, and the same hostility exists in the Federation.
The irony of the film is that the most hate filled Klingons actually conspire WITH the most hate filled members of the Federation to assassinate the Chancellor to sabotage the peace process.
And here we are in 2015 where the 47 traitors are doing the same thing, working hand in hand with "hard line" Iranian haters of the west to sabotage Obama in an attempt to maintain perpetual hatred between the two nations. In the long view I see this as a delaying tactic by the GOP until the next GOP president can take power, execute whatever war pretext they will use, and commence the destruction of Iran (you thought Iraq made Halliburton rich? Wait till you see how much money we will have to pay them to bring the much more formidable Iran to its knees).

Along with his "Maybe that wasnt exactly the best way to do that, he also stated he thought the letter was "reasonable".
