It should be. Iran and the US are fighting ISIS/ISIL together. Go figure.

And so all those tiny heads in DC are exploding. Makes you wonder how that cheeky letter looks now huh? Really dumb. Oh and crazy.

If the enemy of our enemy is not always our friend. You need to take into account: would the enemy of our enemy's enemy be our friend or our enemy? Or, what if our enemy is our occasional, or circumstantial friend, would this enemy be our friend or our enemy some of the time or all of it?

Basically what you are left with is that the enemy of your enemy's enemy, is your enemy as long as that enemy is an enemy of your enemy if they don't support your stance where your enemy is against it.

Iran is seeking to take control in Iraq and other Middle East countries. They want to fight ISIS because they are a rival in that goal. Iran is a terrorist country and has been conducting proxy wars against the U.S. since 1979.

Either way, I really do wish someone was in control in Iraq. Someone sensible.

We overthrew their democracy and installed a dictator, which was what led to the 1979 revolution. Since that time, we have unrelentingly labeled them as the epitome of evil.

Would you be our friend, in their shoes?

Every nation in the world makes foreign policy based on their national interest -- not to make friends. We should recognize what Iran is doing here and not be naive.

Iran ain't the freaking bogeyman.

It's a mid-sized regional power surrounded by US military bases and lots of hostile neighbors. The US invaded the country to the east of it in 2001 and the one west of it in 2003. The US is obliquely threatening to attack it now (as the background to the nuclear negotiations), and mad dog Netanyahu is threatening to do it himself if we don't. (Though maybe he'll be gone after next week, knock on wood.)

Iran of course tries to extend its influence in the region. Why not? It lives there, unlike certain other powers I could name.

If they helped the Iraqi Shiite majority against the foreign occupiers, I'll bet the Iraqis don't consider that terrorism. Even if some here might call it a proxy war.

Iran is supporting the Syrian regime against ISIS and the rest of those armed bands. Who are you supporting? Assad ain't a nice guy, but the democratic opposition is in tatters or living in the Istanbul Hilton, and all that's left are the armed fighters, most of Islamists. And ISIS. And Al Nusra.

Iran supports Hezbollah and Hamas. Mostly. Like many people in the rest of the world, I consider them more national liberation armies than terrorists. (Actually, I think "terrorist" and its variants ought to be retired from the discourse. They're mainly terms of propaganda and polemics.)

I'm glad the Iranians are taking on ISIS, too.

we are in different worlds. Literally. Iran has been saying they will wipe Israel off the face of the earth for decades now. I guess we are not supposed to believe that but believe anything they say about their nuclear ambitions. If Netanyahu does lose next week I suspect you will not be happy with his replacement but that is another matter.

We discussed it here on DU at the time. Iran and ISIS are enemies and it befits Iran to get them out of Iraq.
